“The Monkey and The Turtle”

Once there lived friends, a monkey and a

turtle. One day they saw a banana tree float on the
water. The Turtle swam out and brought it to land.
Since they were friends, they decided to divide it,
cutting it in half across the middle.

“I will have the part with the leaves on,”

said the monkey, thinking that the top was best. The
turtle did not have any choice but to agree because
she could not do anything against the monkey. The
monkey planted his top of the tree, and the turtle planted the stump. Of course, the monkey’s
plant just died. But the turtle’s plant grew and eventually brought a lot of fruit.

The monkey heard of the turtle’s good fortune, so one day,

he passed by to see his friend. “Can you go up the tree and get the
bananas?” the turtle requested the monkey. “I will give you half of the fruit
in exchange,” she added, as she could not climb the tress herself.

The monkey gleefully accepted, but when he got to the fruits,

he started munching, refusing to give the turtle any. Soon after, the
bananas were all gone. The turtle only got some bananas peel that the
monkey once in a while tossed down to her.

Furious, the turtle collected sharp

sticks and surrounded the trunk of the tree with them. Then, she

went away. When the monkey clambered down to the ground, he got badly injured with the sharp
sticks, so he set off to find the turtle to avenge himself.

The monkey looked for a long time and finally found the turtle under a siling labuyo
plant. The monkey was about to punch her, but she whispered, “Keep quiet! I am guarding the
king’s fruits.” The monkey, ever greedy, demanded that he be given some.

“I will give you some,” agreed the turtle, “on condition that
you promise not to eat them until I am far away. The king might see
you and then he would punish me.” The monkey agreed. When the
turtle was a long way off, he began to chew the peppers. They were
very hot, and he burned his mouth badly.

He was now extremely angry and resolved to make

the turtle pay for his misfortunes. He searched all over the woods and
fields for her. At last, he found her near a huge snake pit. The monkey
threatened to kill the turtle.

But she apologized to him profusely and told him,

“Dear monkey, I know you are mad at me. Will you forgive me? I got a
king’s belt for you!”

“Why, surely! Where is it?” said the monkey very eagerly.

“Here it is; I’ll get it for you.”

In his desire to get the king’s belt, the monkey grabbed at the object to which the turtle
was pointing. It was actually a snake that immediately coiled itself around the monkey, almost
squeezing him to death. The monkey managed to free himself from the snake’s hold and swore
that this time; he would kill the turtle as soon as he found her.

The turtle hid under a coconut shell. The monkey had been searching for a long time
and was by this time very tired. He happened to sit on the coconut shell to rest. As he sat there,
he called loudly, “Turtle, where are you?”

“Here I am!” a low voice answered. The monkey looked all around but saw nobody. He
shouted again and again, and the turtle answered him. The sound seemed to come from below
and deep inside him, and he thought that some part of his body was making fun of him.

Thinking it was his abdomen, the monkey

threatened, “Stomach, if you answer again when I
am not talking to you, “I’ll punish you.” Once more he
called out; and once more, “I am here,” came the
answer from below.

This was too much for the monkey. He

grabbed a big stone and began to hit his belly with it.
He pounded so hard he badly injured himself that he
eventually died.
