COMPARISON AND CONTRAST

In your life as a student, you will encounter tasks that require you to compare and
contrast objects, people, scenarios, literary pieces, and others. When you are doing
this, you must examine every aspect that you need to put into consideration. Aside from
that, you should also be observant of every detail. Lastly, you need to take note of your
observations and to do this, you can use comparison and contrast words.

COMPARISON AND CONTRAST WORDS

.
Comparison and contrast words are clue words that help you determine whether a
particular activity is focused on similarities or differences.

3
If you need to point the similarities of what you are comparing, you can use comparison
words. These words tell you that the second idea is like the first one in some way. Some of
these words are - some, like, in the same way, similarly, likewise, and equally.

For example:
Camilla wears a long dress like her mother. (Similarities: Camilla and her
mother's dresses are both long)
Cora bought a brand-new phone the same as Natalie's phone. (Similarities:
Cora's and Natalie's phone are the same)
Noli Me Tangere is played in the theater just like Ibong Adarna and Florante at
Laura. (Similarities: Noli Me Tangere, Ibong Adarna, and Florante at Laura all
played in the theater.

However, if you are pointing the differences, you can use contrast words. These
are words that give the differences between two subjects or statements. Some of these
words are - although, besides, but, unlike, yet, while, and nevertheless.

For example:
Camilla wears a long dress, but her mother attires a short dress.
Cora buys a brand-new phone while Natalie sells her phone.
Jose Rizal wrote Noli Me Tangere, on the other hand, Jose Dela Cruz wrote
Ibong Adarna.

Now that you have knowledge about comparing words, you may answer now the
activities below.

ACTIVITIES

Comparing Multimodal Text

According to NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum, multimodal is
combining two or more forms in delivering information. It can be paper, like in books,
comics, newspapers, and posters. Second, it can be digital, such as slide presentations,
e-books, animations, videos, and web pages. Lastly, it can be live - a performance or an
event.
Below are two examples of multimodal text. Textual format and graphical
format. Both are presenting the same information. Read and answer the following
questions.

Mark’s Daily Spending
M ARK'S WEEKLY SPENDING

fifty pesos for his allowance. Mark
makes sure that he will keep twenty
pesos for his savings while allotting fifty

REMEMBER

• If you would like to point out the similarities of two different objects, people,
places, and others, you can use comparison words, such as, like, alike, similarly,
in the same way, etc.
• If you are referring to the differences of two unlike objects, people, places, and
others, you can use the contrast words, such as, but on the contrary, however,
etc.
• Information can be conveyed in different forms – that is what we called
Multimodal text. Example of these are the textual format that uses words to
narrate the information; and Graphical Format that uses figures and visual
illustrations to show the information.
