Compare and Contrast

EXPECTATIONS
For this module, your goal is to compare and contrast the presentation of the
same topic in different multimodal texts. Specifically, this will help you:
• use signal words in comparing two objects;
• describe features and functions multimodal texts; and
• analyze the similarities and differences of multimodal texts.
Hi! We will begin a new journey as we have another skill to master. Are you
ready? Let us start!
PRETEST
Good job! Now, let us proceed with your new lesson. To achieve our goal in this
module, first, you need to spot the differences between these two pictures.
2
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Encircle the differences between these two pictures and answer the questions
that follow. Find differences as many as you can.
3
If you need to point the similarities of what you are comparing, you can use comparison
words. These words tell you that the second idea is like the first one in some way. Some of
these words are - some, like, in the same way, similarly, likewise, and equally.
For example:
Camilla wears a long dress like her mother. (Similarities: Camilla and her
mother's dresses are both long)
Cora bought a brand-new phone the same as Natalie's phone. (Similarities:
Cora's and Natalie's phone are the same)
Noli Me Tangere is played in the theater just like Ibong Adarna and Florante at
Laura. (Similarities: Noli Me Tangere, Ibong Adarna, and Florante at Laura all
played in the theater.
However, if you are pointing the differences, you can use contrast words. These
are words that give the differences between two subjects or statements. Some of these
words are - although, besides, but, unlike, yet, while, and nevertheless.
For example:
Camilla wears a long dress, but her mother attires a short dress.
Cora buys a brand-new phone while Natalie sells her phone.
Jose Rizal wrote Noli Me Tangere, on the other hand, Jose Dela Cruz wrote
Ibong Adarna.
Now that you have knowledge about comparing words, you may answer now the
activities below.

REMEMBER
• If you would like to point out the similarities of two different objects, people,
places, and others, you can use comparison words, such as, like, alike, similarly,
in the same way, etc.
• If you are referring to the differences of two unlike objects, people, places, and
others, you can use the contrast words, such as, but on the contrary, however,
etc.
• Information can be conveyed in different forms – that is what we called
Multimodal text. Example of these are the textual format that uses words to
narrate the information; and Graphical Format that uses figures and visual
illustrations to show the information.
Using the Venn diagram below, examine the process of how books tell a story
compared to the movies.
