Midterm Examination
Q1. A one-dimensional fluid flows through a stepped porous channel shown in Fig. 1. It is
required to determine the velocities in each segment using the finite element method. Assume
permeability Kxx=1.25 cm/s for the porous material. [20 Marks]:

Q2. A 2D beam is shown in Fig. 2. Point A is fixed for all DOFs (vertical, horizontal and
rotational). Point B is fixed for horizontal and rotational DOFs but is free in the vertical
direction. E 2 105 MPa , I 2 104 m 4 , and L 3 m . When point B moves upward (in
vertical direction) a displacement of =50 mm, it is required to: [20 Marks]
(1) Determine the reactions at point A and B using the FEM.
(2) Draw the shear and moment diagrams following the sign convention in Engineering
Mechanics.

Q3. A symmetric two-bar truss with a concentrated mass (M) at point 2 is subjected to a step
force as shown in Fig. 3. Assume the truss is initially static and has geometry nonlinearity
with large deflection but small strain. It is required to calculate the vertical (in y direction)
displacement and acceleration at the point 2 when t=0.02 sec using the central difference
method. [25 Marks]

Q5. A one-dimensional truss bar is shown in Fig. 5. The truss bar is made of a brittle material.
The elastic modulus is E. The tensile strength is ft. The yield criterion follows
F f t (1 p / u ) 0 , where u is ultimate strain and p is the plastic strain. Assume
associate plastic flow. It is required to: [15 Marks]
a. For a given incremental strain (d) on the yield surface, derive the equations for
incremental plastic strain (dp) and incremental stress (d) as functions of E, ft, u
and d.
b. Calculate the stress in the truss bar after applying an elongation =0.6 mm if the truss
bar is originally undeformed. Assume L=200 mm, ft=0.1 MPa, E=100 MPa, and u
=0.006.
