CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The rising popularity of Korean Culture throughout the world is called Korean

Wave. The Korean popular culture which increase mainly through the mass media is

now enjoying high popularity outside Korea and this is how the Korean Wave occurs.

The impact of the Korean wave has not only permeated popular culture but also is a

measure of positive lifestyle for many Asian people (Ryoo, 2008). Korean Wave

(Hallyu) mainly contains of different Korean television dramas, film, pop music, movie

stars animation and comics including mobile content like cell phones and iPods, video

or computer games, as well as the latest fashion, food, home appliances and cosmetics,

assertively expanding to things like dance, sculpture, painting, cuisine, tourism and also

language. Culture, on the other hand, is known as the manner and also knowledge of a

specific group of people, who literally shares the same language, religion, traits, social

habits, also arts and music. In general, the overly popular works that contributes to the

spread of the Korean Culture are mostly entertainment oriented genres, such as Korean

dramas, K-Pop (a type of musical genre), and Korean Films, although the all known

Korean Wave has been defined in various ways. The variety of Korean Wave contents

shows the cultural diversity and richness of Korea (Ha, 2017: 58).

Lifestyle is a relatively fixed manner that is adopted throughout one's life whose

foundation is laid in families. It is also influenced by one's culture, race, religion,

socioeconomic status, and beliefs (Varela-Mato et al., 2012). In other words, lifestyle

is perceive as individual's objective and quantifiable personality (Younis, 2014).

As Korean culture is spreading rapidly around the globe, it’s not a surprise that

not only students that are senior high school will be affected with this thing called

‘Hallyu” or Korean Wave but also younger older Filipino. The researcher’s purpose to

understand more the Impact of Korean Pop Culture in the Lifestyle of Selected Grade

12 Students of Asia Technological School of Science and Arts, about the culture being

studied about and hopefully it can open student’s eye to how wonderful this culture and

ours is.

In this study, the students may understand what this Korean Culture or Pop

wave has changed the other students’ way of thinking about our own culture, beliefs

and also the students’ lifestyle. This led the researchers to study the Korean culture or

pop wave on how it affects the students specially their lifestyle. Although the

researcher’s do not tend to make the readers think wrong about Korean Culture but to

open the student’s mind in abundant things such as showcasing different cultural beliefs

and practices.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Korean Pop Culture is originated in Korea and now viral here in the Philippines.

It mainly captures the attention of many people, especially on teenager students. Some

of students literally copying the choreography performed by their favorite stars, Korean

fashion trends, singing different Korean music and so forth. Korean dramas also have

a stronghold on many students. Students, spend hours watching K dramas and often

neglect their studies.

The Korean Pop Culture has had an impact on students’ lifestyle. The Korean

Pop affected students’ way of living, as well as their attitudes. This study intends to

know the Impact of Korean Pop Culture in Lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students of

Asia Technological School of Science and Arts located at 1506, Entrance of Golden

City, Brgy. Dila, 4026 Santa Rosa Laguna. Asiatech has been also conquered by the K-

pop music, it ruled the school. Before, every morning assemblies like exercises and

also on the physical education, every students’ dance, sing and study it. K-pop

generation is caused by globalization through the use of the broad internet. That is why

most of people are updated in the happenings in our world. And like many other

organizations in the internet, organizations’ regarding K-pop is one of them. Facebook,

Twitter and many other are social networking cites where group of people in favor of

K-pop are present, especially the students of Asia Technological School of Science and

Arts.

Through survey from the Selected Grade 12 Students of Asia Technological

School of Science and Arts, researchers will able to know the impact of Korean Pop

Culture in their Lifestyle. In addition, this will serve as way to know if Korean Pop

Culture helps them to have a great lifestyle or not.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the impact of Korean Pop Culture in Educational

Performance of Selected Grade 12 Students.

Also, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Demographic Profile of respondents as to;

1.1 Age and;

1.2 Sex (Male or Female)

2. Level of idolizing Korean Pop Culture of the participants in terms of:

2.1 Fashion

2.2 Movies/ K-drama

2.3 Music/ Genre and;

2.4 Lifestyle

3. How does level of idolizing affects the lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students of

Asia Technological School of Science and Arts in terms of;

3.1 Fashion

3.2 Movies/ K-drama

3.3 Music/ Genre and;

3.4 Lifestyle

HYPOTHESIS

The researchers aims to determine the significant relationship between the level

of idolizing Korean Pop Culture and Lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students of Asia

Technological School of Science and Arts. The following hypothesis will be tested:

Ho1: There is no significant impact between the level of idolizing Korean Pop Culture

and Lifestyle as perceive by the participants.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

The adherent theories served as path to support the ideas of the researchers. The

theories would present them a necessary information to direct and shed light to the

problem at hand.

Social Cognitive Theory

Bandura (1960), made a study about the Social cognitive theory, he found that

the mind is an active force that constructs one’s reality selectively, encodes

information, performs behavior on the basis of values and expectations and impose

structure on its own actions. It is through an understanding of the processes involved

in one’s construction of reality that enables human behavior to be understood, predicted

and changed. In view of the theory, the student’s academic achievement is a product of

interaction of his personality and consequently, study behavior he develops basing on

his expectations of the outcome of his actions.

This implies that, if you relate it to the influence of Korean Culture to the sudden

change of cultural habits, it can be based on what they see, hear or what they actually

think the outcome may be. Students tend to apply this theory in a much more easier

way possible, like looking back onto the Student's past cultural behavior, they can

predict or think what possible outcome can occur. Same as consuming Korean Pop

Culture, the way the students may think in Filipino cultures, it can change in how the

students absorb or understand the homeland’s ethics.

Cultivation Theory

Cultivation theory was proposed by George Gerbner, cultivation theory

examines the long-term effects of television viewing on viewers' conceptions of social

reality. Cultivation analysis initiated as part of the Cultural Indicators Project founded

by George Gerbner in the late 1960s. The central hypothesis of cultivation analysis is

that people who spend more time watching television are more likely to perceive the

real world in a way as most commonly depicted in television messages, as compared

to those who watch less television, but are otherwise comparable in major demographic

features (Gerbner, 1969).

This implies that, researchers can relate it to consuming Korean Pop Culture of

students, by watching music videos and dramas somehow students tend to think that

life or the Koreans’ way of living is much more enjoyable just like how they see in the

television. Students envisioned that everything they see on screen is what they see in

reality.

Walberg's Theory

This theory of academic achievement posits that psychological characteristics

of individual students and their immediate psychological environments influence

educational outcomes (cognitive, behavioral, and attitudinal) (Reynolds & Walberg,

1992). This implies that because of the psychological characteristic and environment

of a student, it influence educational outcome that may lead into students’ academic

achievement. Korean Pop Culture is now spreading all over our surrounding. Filipino

in today’s generation are trend seeker, that’s why some of students idolize and so

obsessed with K-pop. Idolizing someone may serve as motivation and because of it,

students’ are able to boost their educational performances and passions to achieve

unexpected achievements.

Thus, the above-mentioned theories sited can support the researchers’ study as

it stated information that can be related to the topic. Despite of knowing the impacts of

Korean Pop Culture in students’ Lifestyle, the researchers wanted to know the factors

leading them to idolize and obsessed with the Korean pop culture. These theories talks

about the influence of Korean Culture to the Lifestyles of students, the relationship

between media to the way of lifestyle of the students and the influence of environment

in their Cultural Habits.

Figure 1 give a summary of what the research is all about. In input, researchers intends

to know the participants demographic profile, level of idolizing Korean Pop Culture of

the participants in terms of Fashion, Movies/K-drama, Music/Genre and Korean

Lifestyle, and how does level of idolizing affects the lifestyle of respondents of Asia

Technological School of Science and Arts in terms of Fashion, Movies/K-drama,

Music/Genre and Korean Lifestyle. The process shows how the data will be gathered.

Nevertheless, output shows how researchers identify the Impact of Korean Pop Culture

in the Lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students of Asia Technological School of Science

and Arts A.Y 2020-2021. This framework shows the input, process and output. This is

how the study developed.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The researchers choose Asia Technological School of Science and Arts as a

respondents on this study because students’ and even other teachers notices the likes of

other students’ inside the school grounds in being in the Korean Pop Culture Trend.

The researchers choose Grade 12 as the subject of the research because some of the

students from Grade 12 idolize and obsessed with Korean Pop Culture. In addition,

based on statistics, mostly ages of 18 and above are major factors on why Korean Pop

Culture are spreading widely across the globe, and by this statistic result, the

researchers assumed that Grade 12 students are a huge help of getting the answers the

researchers' needed. The scope of this research mainly revolve around students who

idolize Korean Pop Culture. The study covers the Level of idolizing Korean Pop

Culture of the respondents in terms of: Fashion, Movies/K-drama, Music/Genre and

Lifestyle of the selected Grade 12 students, to see the impact of these level on their

Lifestyle. However, every study has a limitation. Since our study focused only on Asia

Technological School of Science and Arts, only the perspective of the respondents of

this school would be studied and analyzed. Respondents will ask to answer the

research-made questionnaire that is provided by the researchers.

The study only limits on Asia Technological School of Science and Arts. In

general, the focus of the study is to determine the Impact of Korean Pop Culture in the

Lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students. The researchers have specific target

respondents such as 84 out of 517 Grade 12 Students. This study only focuses on the

ff;

1. Demographic of the respondents.

2. Level of idolizing Level of idolizing Korean Pop Culture of the participants in terms

of; Fashion, Movies/K-drama, Music/Genre and Lifestyle.

3. How does level of idolizing affects the lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students of

Asia Technological School of Science and Arts in terms of; Fashion, Movies/K-drama,

Music/Genre and Lifestyle.

The information needed will be gathered using the survey questionnaire.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research study is important to know the Impact of Korean Pop Culture in

the Lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students.

This research will benefit the following:

Students, this study provides students some knowledge of how “Hallyu” had

changed other students’ perspective in idolizing and praising Korean Culture too much

that they forgotten how this culture of us should be treasured and remembered. It will

give students a realization that it’s not bad to a be in trend when it comes to what it

“In” now like K-pop and their wonderful culture but they should remember that too

much is bad. The students’ may also realize that KPOP has brought so much impact

when it comes to the cultural habits of Filipino students of Asiatech.

Teachers, the given data would guide the teachers on what to do with the

students claiming that Korean culture is way much better than Filipino culture and how

to handle them. The researchers also wanted to let them know how and why this

Phenomenon affect Students from this generation across the country or around the

world.

Parents, like the teachers, the parents too will understand why their children is

too much attached in this kind of behavior and why and what are the possible outcomes

if they continue to neglect the Filipino culture or simply ignore how much it affects the

students’ lifestyle.

Future researchers, if they conduct the same research, they will not struggle

on finding the impact of K-Pop culture around the world more specifically in the

Philippines, in the students’ Lifestyle or Cultural Habits. The research that the will do

will give information about the said topic that may help them to future studies about

how teen behavior is like in this generation.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For better clarification and understanding of the terms related to the study. The

following terms are defined conceptually and operationally.

Asiatech

-Asia Technological School of Science and Arts

-school of selected grade 12 students.

Culture

-the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social

group (Merriam Webster).

-known as the manner and knowledge of a specific group of people, who shares the

same language, religion, traits, social habits, also arts and music.

Korean Popular Music (K-Pop)

-For a long time, the term "K-pop" has been used to describe a "genre," when it's simply

a generic, catchall term for popular music that comes from Korea (Morin, 2019)

-a type of musical genre.

Korean Wave (Hallyu)

- The Korean Wave (Hallyu) refers to the global popularity of South Korea's cultural

economy exporting pop culture, entertainment, music, TV dramas and movies

Lifestyle

- The typical way of life of an individual, group, or culture (Merriam Webster).

laid in families. It is also influenced by one's culture, race, religion, socioeconomic

status, and beliefs.

Teenager

- A teenager is someone who is between thirteen and nineteen years old (Collins

Dictionary).
