CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The rising popularity of Korean Culture throughout the world is called Korean
Wave. The Korean popular culture which increase mainly through the mass media is
now enjoying high popularity outside Korea and this is how the Korean Wave occurs.
The impact of the Korean wave has not only permeated popular culture but also is a
measure of positive lifestyle for many Asian people (Ryoo, 2008). Korean Wave
(Hallyu) mainly contains of different Korean television dramas, film, pop music, movie
stars animation and comics including mobile content like cell phones and iPods, video
or computer games, as well as the latest fashion, food, home appliances and cosmetics,
assertively expanding to things like dance, sculpture, painting, cuisine, tourism and also
language. Culture, on the other hand, is known as the manner and also knowledge of a
specific group of people, who literally shares the same language, religion, traits, social
habits, also arts and music. In general, the overly popular works that contributes to the
spread of the Korean Culture are mostly entertainment oriented genres, such as Korean
dramas, K-Pop (a type of musical genre), and Korean Films, although the all known
Korean Wave has been defined in various ways. The variety of Korean Wave contents
shows the cultural diversity and richness of Korea (Ha, 2017: 58).

Lifestyle is a relatively fixed manner that is adopted throughout one's life whose
socioeconomic status, and beliefs (Varela-Mato et al., 2012). In other words, lifestyle

not only students that are senior high school will be affected with this thing called
‘Hallyu” or Korean Wave but also younger older Filipino. The researcher’s purpose to
understand more the Impact of Korean Pop Culture in the Lifestyle of Selected Grade
12 Students of Asia Technological School of Science and Arts, about the culture being
studied about and hopefully it can open student’s eye to how wonderful this culture and
ours is.
In this study, the students may understand what this Korean Culture or Pop
wave has changed the other students’ way of thinking about our own culture, beliefs
and also the students’ lifestyle. This led the researchers to study the Korean culture or
pop wave on how it affects the students specially their lifestyle. Although the
researcher’s do not tend to make the readers think wrong about Korean Culture but to
open the student’s mind in abundant things such as showcasing different cultural beliefs
and practices.

Korean Pop Culture is originated in Korea and now viral here in the Philippines.
It mainly captures the attention of many people, especially on teenager students. Some
of students literally copying the choreography performed by their favorite stars, Korean
fashion trends, singing different Korean music and so forth. Korean dramas also have
a stronghold on many students. Students, spend hours watching K dramas and often

pop music, it ruled the school. Before, every morning assemblies like exercises and
also on the physical education, every students’ dance, sing and study it. K-pop
generation is caused by globalization through the use of the broad internet. That is why
most of people are updated in the happenings in our world. And like many other

The researchers aims to determine the significant relationship between the level
of idolizing Korean Pop Culture and Lifestyle of Selected Grade 12 Students of Asia
Technological School of Science and Arts. The following hypothesis will be tested:

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK
The adherent theories served as path to support the ideas of the researchers. The
theories would present them a necessary information to direct and shed light to the

Thus, the above-mentioned theories sited can support the researchers’ study as
it stated information that can be related to the topic. Despite of knowing the impacts of
Korean Pop Culture in students’ Lifestyle, the researchers wanted to know the factors
leading them to idolize and obsessed with the Korean pop culture. These theories talks
about the influence of Korean Culture to the Lifestyles of students, the relationship
between media to the way of lifestyle of the students and the influence of environment

Figure 1 give a summary of what the research is all about. In input, researchers intends
to know the participants demographic profile, level of idolizing Korean Pop Culture of
Lifestyle, and how does level of idolizing affects the lifestyle of respondents of Asia
Music/Genre and Korean Lifestyle. The process shows how the data will be gathered.
Nevertheless, output shows how researchers identify the Impact of Korean Pop Culture
and Arts A.Y 2020-2021. This framework shows the input, process and output. This is
respondents on this study because students’ and even other teachers notices the likes of
other students’ inside the school grounds in being in the Korean Pop Culture Trend.
The researchers choose Grade 12 as the subject of the research because some of the
students from Grade 12 idolize and obsessed with Korean Pop Culture. In addition,
based on statistics, mostly ages of 18 and above are major factors on why Korean Pop
Culture are spreading widely across the globe, and by this statistic result, the
researchers assumed that Grade 12 students are a huge help of getting the answers the
researchers' needed. The scope of this research mainly revolve around students who

Lifestyle. However, every study has a limitation. Since our study focused only on Asia
Technological School of Science and Arts, only the perspective of the respondents of
this school would be studied and analyzed. Respondents will ask to answer the

on finding the impact of K-Pop culture around the world more specifically in the
Philippines, in the students’ Lifestyle or Cultural Habits. The research that the will do
will give information about the said topic that may help them to future studies about
