Lesson Characteristics of Artworks

from Various Art Movements

2
Let’s Recall
We have already discussed about the elements and principles which can be seen in
artworks during modern art. As we continue discussing about art, you will be learn about
the characteristics of every artwork during the art movements. Distinct characteristics of
every art movement will be presented in this module.

Let’s Explore
In all of human history, art has mirrored life in the community, society, and the world
in all its colors, lines, shapes, and forms. The same has been true in the last two centuries
with world events and global trends being reflected in the art movements.
The decades from 1900 to the present have seen the human race living in an ever
shrinking planet. The 20th century saw a boom in the interchange of ideas, beliefs,
values, and lifestyles that continues to bring the citizens of the world closer together.

Impressionism
• A style or movement that depicts the visual impression of the movement
especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color.

Characteristics of Impressionism:
• Used short “broken” strokes that were intentionally made visible to the viewer.
• Placed pure unmixed colors side by side
• The result was feeling of energy and intensity as the colors appeared to shift.
• Use natural lights to give their painting a feeling of Freshness

Post Impressionism
• Expanded and experimented the bold new ways
• Use geometric approach
• Fragmented objects

Expressionism
A style which the maker seeks to express the inner world of emotion rather than
external.

The Scream by Edvard Munch(1893), which inspired 20th-century Expressionists

FAUVISM
• An art style that used bold, vibrant colors and visual distortions
• Derived from le fauves (wild beast)
• Referring to the group of French Expressionist painters who painted in this style
CUBISM
Derived its name from the word cube, a three dimensional geometric figure
composed of strictly measured lines, planes and angles.

5
DADAISM
• Characterized by dream fantasies, memory images and visual tricks and
surprises
• Their works appeared playful but it arose from the pain that the European artist
felt after the sufferings brought by the World War I
• The artist rebelled against established norms and authorities against traditional
styles in arts
• They choose the child’s term for hobbyhorse, dada refer to their new “non-style”

SURREALISM
Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its
visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory
conditions of dream and reality." Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes with
photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed
painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.

ABSTRACT REALISM
Abstract realism is difficult to explain because of the infusion of two distinct styles of art:
abstract and realistic. Abstract does not attempt to depict real objects, as it is concerned
only with the colors, lines, shapes and rhythms that create the artwork. In a sense,
abstract art is art without a concrete, physical construct to work from. Realistic art aims to
create realistic interpretations of real objects. When you combine these two concepts, you
get a new style of art that attempts to depict the emotions behind a particular real-life
object.

Let’s Elaborate
Activity # 1. Art Movements and its Characteristics Direction: List all the art movements
which you encountered in this module and give the distinct characteristics opposite it.

Let’s Remember
Impressionism was an art movement that planted the seeds for what we know now as
modern art. The movement began in Europe in the mid-1800s and introduce exciting new
approaches and techniques for applying the elements of art (particularly color and texture)
in ways that gave impressionist paintings a sense of energy, freshness and intensity.
Expressionism is a movement in modern art that began in Europe in the early1900s. It
was more concerned with emotional impact rather than

7
realism. It has several sub-movements namely: neoprimitivism, fauvism, Dadaism,
surrealism, social realism.
Abstractionism was another movement of modern art in Europe in the early 1900s.
It was logical and rational. It reduced an image into geometrical shapes, patterns, lines,
angles, textures, and fields or stroke of color.

Let's Apply
To check if you really understood the distinct characteristics of artworks during the
different art movements, please design or create your own artwork. Choose from any of
the art movements what you would do. Select art materials that are readily available to
you. Decide on the title of your artwork. Present your work during our virtual class. Be
ready for the message you want to portray in your artwork during our class discussion

Let’s Evaluate
Match Column A to Column B by drawing a line to connect the two.

Column A Column B 1. Surrealism A. an art that is difficult to

explain 1. Dadaism B. best known for visual
artworks and writing 2. Fauvism C. a three
dimensional geometric
figure 3. Expressionism D. art characterized by dream
fantasies 4. Impressionism E. art that used bold, vibrant colors as visual
distortions 5. Cubism F. the maker seeks to express
inner world of emotions 6. Abstractionism
G. used broken strokes that were
intentionally made visible

Let’s Extend
Which among the forms of expressionism (fauvism, Dadaism, surrealism, social
realism) appeals to you the most? And which does not appeal to you at all? Explain why?
