The case is about the emergence of social media sites. The first social networking site was SD
which emerged in the year 1997. The site was able to attract three million members, but many
users felt it as an uninteresting destination. The Company soon ran out of money and it shut
down in the year 2000. Next big website was F with much attractive an innovative features. Its My Textbook Solutions
innovativeness attracted seven million users, but the company failed on the development of
infrastructure for the same. The company did not worked well and shut down. The users moved
to MS, which offered space for blogs, pictures and facility to listen music. MS imitated some of
the features of F and leveraged almost 20 million subscribers. Later it signed a deal with G.
Meanwhile, FB was developed by college students in 2004. It was a better experience for the

Factors that made MS more successful than F and SD:
F and SD have an increasing base of users but there was significant issues related to privacy. All
profiles were viewable by others and there was no privacy at all. In addition, there was lack of
sufficient support infrastructure that could have supported the traffic users shifting to other sites.
Lack of proper infrastructure was causing delays in opening a web page and it prompt the users
to flee to MS. Moreover, MS was not just a platform to make finds and get connected with them.
It has many other attractive options like blogging, listening music, uploading photographs etc.

Factors that enabled FB to overtake MS:
When FB was launched in the year 2004 at HU, MS already had more than a million users and it
was becoming one of the most dominant social networking sites. In 2005, MS was sold to NC
and by the time it also started to run into serious issues. In 2008, MS was overtaken by FB in
terms of worldwide visitors. For FB, the market was already booming with the rising availability of
internet, broadband and diverse audience. FB expanded gradually with its clean and customized
designs which allowed it to establish itself as a safe space. The controlled growth of FB allowed
FB to invent innovative tools and technologies with more attractive features that made it stand
out of others. FB has better privacy settings and better target group.
