DESIGN OF CYLINDRICAL WALL

Assuming Thickness of wall = 200 mm. Concrete Strength: M-30

Case I - The tank is full & ignoring external earth pressure from out side
Dia. of tank = 3.0 m Height = 3.05 m
𝐻2 3.052
= = = 15.55
𝐷𝑡 3.00×0.20

As per IS code method. For coefficient of maximum moment and tension.

Refer table 10 for moment
Maximum cantilever Moment at bottom = 0.0082 x 1000 x 2.85 x 3.052
= 217.04 Kg- m (Producing tension near water face)
Design moment = 217.40 kg – m
Depth of wall required = {(218.40 x 100) / (16.4 x100)} 0.5 = 3.64 cm = 36.4 mm
Minimum thickness (t) of wall is required = 8 + 230/40 = 13.75 cm = 137.5 mm
Provide 200 mm thickness of wall at bottom & up to top.
Area of vertical reinforcement (Ast) required for cantilever moment at bottom
Ast = (217.40 x 100) /(1500 x 0.87 x 16) = 1.04 cm2
Min. vertical reinforcement @ 0.217% = 0.217x20 = 4.34 Cm2
Provided 8 mm dia. Reinforcement @ 200 mm c/c in vertical directions on both face of
wall.
The vertical wall of tank is fixed rigidly to the base floor. Therefore maximum hoop tension
at 0.7 H
Refer table 12 for tension
Maxi. Tension = 0.687 x 1000 x 3.05 x 1.60 = 3352.56 Kg
Steel = 3352.56/1500 = 2.24 cm2
Minimum requirement of Ast = 0.217 x 20 = 4.34 cm2
3352
Tensile stress= =1.64 kg/cm2< 15 kg/cm2
20×100+8×5

Provided hoop reinforcement of 8 mm dia. Bar @ 180 mm c/c up to 1.08 m height from
bottom and then, 8 mm dia. Bar @200 mm c/c from height of 1.08 m to top on both
faces of wall.

Case I - The tank is empty & full earth from out side
The tank is 2.4 m below GR. Level
Assuming angle of repose = 300 & Density of soil as 1800 Kg/ m3
Consider Worst case when water table is at surface
Considering bottom (1 > H/4) will act as cantilever beyond that hoop action will
predominant.
Earth pressure at base = 1/3 x (1800/3 x 2.40) + (1000 x 2.84 = 2880 kg/ m2
Bending moment = 0.5 x 2880 x 1 x 1/3 = 480 kg-m /m
Reinforcement required for B. M. =480 x 100 / (1500 x 0.87 x 16) =2.29 Cm2
Thus 8 mm dia. Bar @ 200 mm C/c Provide at outer face is sufficient.

DESIGN OF BOTTOM BASE SLAB OF SUMP WALL

Assuming Thickness of bottom slab = 200 mm. Concrete Strength: M-30

Uplift pressure at base = 1000 x 2.4 = 2400 kg/m2
Check against floatation when tank is empty & 300 mm projection beyond the wall.
Total upward flotation force = 0.785 x 4.002 x 2400 = 30144 kg
Total downward force:
Wt of Roof slab of PH = 0.785 x 3.402 x 0.1 x 2500 = 2268.65 kg
Wt of Top Ring Beam = 3.14 x 3.20 x 0.20 x 0.3 x 2500 = 1507.02 kg
Wt of Brick Wall of PH = 3.14 x 3.20x 0.2 x 3.00 x1980 = 11937.02 kg
Wt of roof slab of SW = 0.785 x 3.402 x 0.125 x 2500 = 2836.20 kg
Wt of Wall = 3.14 x 3.20 x 0.20 x 3.05 x 2500 = 15323.2 kg
Wt of earth on projection = 0.785 x (4.002 - 3.40)2 x 2.4 x 1800 =19533.74 kg
Wt of Base Slab = 0.785 x 4.002 x 0.2 x 2500 = 6280.00 kg
= 59686.0 kg
Net effective pressure = (uplift pressure a base – weight of bottom slab)
= 2400 – (0.20 x2500) = 1900 kg/m2
Radial & circumferential moment at the center of slab:
(Mr)c = (Mr)Ө = 0.075 wa2 = 0.075 x 1900 x (1.60)2 = 364.8 kg-m
Radial moment at support of slab:
(Mr)e = -0.125 wa2 = -0.125 x 1300 x (1.60)2 = - 608.0 kg-m
Design moment = 608 kg-m
Effective depth of slab = {(608 x100) / (16.71 x100)} 0.5 = 6.03 Cm= 60.3 mm
Hence, provide Overall depth of slab = 200mm
Area of steel required at center = (364.8 x 100) / (1900 x 0.87 x 15.0) = 1.47 Cm2
Area of steel required at support on top= (608.0 x 100) / (1900 x 0.87 x 15.0) = 2.45 Cm2
Minimum steel = 0.24 x 18 = 4.32 Cm3
Provided 8 mm bar @ 200 mm c/c in both direction (Square mesh) on top & bottom
and to maintain the proper spacing between both mesh, chairs of 10 mm bars are to
be provided as required.
To care of negative moment at support at bottom extend the vertical outer bars inside
the bottom of slab up to 400 mm center of support & inner bars on outer side up to the
edge of slab excluding side cover.

Check for shear:

V – 0.5 x 2wa = 3800 kg. Therefore, Shear Stress = V/bd = 2.53 kg/cm2 (safe)
