Rotational Dynamics: 1.1 Short Answer Questions
Rotational Dynamics: 1.1 Short Answer Questions
2. If the ice on the polar caps of the earth melts, how will it affect the duration
of the day? Explain.
3. A ballet dancer stretches her hands when she wants to come to rest. Why?
4. Why is it easier to hold down a 10 kg body in your hand at your side than
to hold it with your arm extended horizontally?
7. Show that in rotational motion, power is the product of torque and angular
velocity.
11. A ballet dancer spins with 2.4 rev/s with her arms outstretched when the
moment of inertia about the axis of rotation is I. With her arms folded, the
moment of inertia about same axis becomes 0.6I. Calculate the new rate of
spin.
12. An electric fan is turned off, and its angular velocity decreases uniformly from
500 rev/min to 200 rev/min in 4 seconds. Find the angular acceleration and
the number of revolutions made by the motor in the 4 sec interval.

13. A constant torque of 500 Nm turns a wheel which has a moment of inertia
20 kgm2 about it’s centre. Find the angular velocity gained in 2 seconds and
the kinetic energy gained.
14. A computer disk drive is turned on starting from the rest and has constant
angular acceleration, a) how long did it take to make the first complete
rotation, and b) what is it’s angular acceleration? Given that the disk took
0.750 secs for the drive to make it’s second complete revolution.
15. A ballet dancer spins about a vertical axis at 1 rev/sec with her arms
stretched. With her arms folded, her moment of inertia about the axis
decreases by 40 %, calculate the new rate of revolution.
16. A constant torque of 200 Nm turns a wheel about it’s center. The moment
of inertia about the axis is 100 kg m2 . Find the kinetic energy gained after
20 revolutions.
17. Speed of a body spinning about an axis increase from the rest to 100 rev/min
in 5 sec., if a constant torque of 20 Nm is applied. The external torque is
then removed at the body comes to rest in 100 sec. due to friction. Calculate
the frictional torque.
18. A disc of moment of inertia 0.1 kgm2 about its center and radius 0.2 m is
released from rest on a plane inclined at 30◦ to the horizontal. Calculate the
angular velocity after it has rolled 2 m down the plane if its mass is 5 kg.
19. The atoms in the oxygen molecule O2 may be considered to be point masses
separated by a distance of 1.2 × 10−10 m. The molecular speed of an oxygen
molecule at s.t.p. is 460 m/s . Given that the rotational kinetic energy of the
molecule is two-thirds of its translational kinetic energy, calculate its angular
velocity at s.t.p. assuming that molecular rotation takes place about an axis
through the center of, and perpendicular to, the line joining the atoms.
