INTRODUCTION
Welcome
We would like to extend a very warm welcome to you to this MOOC course on AI and Law. If this
is your first visit, we recommend that you begin by reading this document as it gives a good overview
and provides instructions how to navigate the course. After that, we suggest that you simply begin
with the first, introductory module and then continue in the order of the course. But please feel free
to browse around at your own liking and pace.
The Course
Like we mentioned above, we have created a new MOOC course called AI and Law. The course will
give you a basic understanding of how artificial intelligence impacts different areas of society and law.
We will discuss a wide array of topics, ranging from the basics of AI software and hardware and what
legal issues these dimensions raise, to the use of CCTV in criminal investigations. Furthermore, the
course examines a selected number of future challenges connected to artificial intelligence within
various fields of law.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is divided into four modules, each module representing about one week. The video lectures
are the main method of teaching. In order to deepen your understanding of the topics discussed, we
have included a reading for each lecture. In these you will find more in-depth information about the
topics in the lecture, in the form of articles, literature and more.
Each module finishes with a graded quiz. Please note that module 4 also contains a peer graded
assignment in addition to the quiz. You can read more about quizzes and assignments below.
The first module of the course provides a general introduction to the field of AI and Law. The module
also explores the legal significance of AI software and AI hardware.

Module 2 – Legal AI in the Public Sector
This module examines the way in which AI is used in public law. The module specifically looks into
four distinct ways in which AI is used in the public law context: AI and legal responsibility, in what
ways AI can be used in criminal law, how to use AI to model law and lastly, how AI can be used by
public authorities and administrations to optimize the services that they provide to us, the citizens.
The third module explains the impact of AI in the private sector. The module includes AI and IP Law,
how AI can be a valuable source in predicting legal outcomes and lastly, how AI and big data can and
is being used to impact the financial market.
In the fourth and last module of the course, selected challenges connected to artificial intelligence
within various fields of law are discussed. What kind of impact AI will have in these areas is a complex
question and this module addresses several issues regarding health law, labour law and competition
law.

QUIZZES AND ASSIGNMENTS
Quizzes
Each module finishes with a graded, multiple answer quiz. The quiz consists of four questions that
are intended to assess your understanding of the particular topics discussed in the lectures. In order
to pass the quiz, you must obtain a score of at least 70 %. If you wish to pass the course and receive
a certificate, you must pass all four quizzes.
Honors assignment
Module 4 also contains a peer graded honors assignment in addition to the graded quiz. This is a short,
essay style assignment that will be reviewed and graded by your classmates. The assignment isn’t
mandatory, but rather a part of the optional honors track. Learners who complete the assignment, in
addition to meeting the primary passing requirements for the course, will receive an Honors
Designation on their Course Certificate. You will also be required to grade a number of your peers in
order to pass. A score of at least 60% is required to pass the assignment.
Although the Honors Assignment is optional, we highly recommend that you complete the assignment
as it is a great opportunity to practice what you have learnt throughout the course and to get valuable
feed-back from your peers. In addition, successfully completing the assignment means that you will
receive special recognition if you decide to issue a final certificate for the course.
