REVIEW OF LITERATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes the ideas, generalization or conclusions, methodologies and others. Those that

were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the

present study.

Local According to Apolinar (2019), HUMSS strands for Humanities and Social Sciences. It is one of

the strands offered to Senior High students. This strand is for learners who aim to take up journalism,

communication arts, liberal arts education, and other social science-related courses in college. The

HUMSS strand revolves around improving a student's reading, writing and speaking skills because

if you haven't noticed yet, people who choose this strand are aspiring to become members of the

society who will be dealing with a lot of people. Students under the HUMSS strand are those who

are people-oriented and curious about the other side of the wall. This is for those who are considering

taking up journalism, communication arts, liberal arts education, and other social science-related

courses in college. (Palamog, 2017)

Paleza (2018) stated that being a HUMSS student is pressumed to be easy since they did not focus

on Science or Math. However, Humanities and Social Sciences strand focuses on other field. It

covers Political Science, Literature, Anthropology, Philosopy, World Religion, Linguistic, Psychology,

Sociology, Economics, History and many more which are mostly in relation with society and

interaction. Strand shaming is not a new issue added by Paleza. The implementation of K to 12

sparked the growth of strand hierarchy. Strand hierarchy is the belief that this strand is superior than

the other. However, strand shaming in HUMSS strand affects the choice of those upcoming Senior

High School students because of false rumors and wrong information regarding this strand.
INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

The Humanities and Social Sciences subjects provide a broad understanding of the world in which

we live, and how people can participate as active and informed citizens with high-level skills needed

for the 21st century. The subjects taught in Humanities and Social Science classes include: History.

A humanities tutelage preserves the great accomplishments of the past, provides insight into, and

understanding of the world we live in, and provides the paraphernalia to imagine the future. It is

through a humanities education that sophomore are empowered to make moral, spiritual, and

theoretical sense of the sphere. The Humanities and Social Science subjects include a range of skills

that can be represented broadly as questioning, researching, analysing, evaluating and

communicating. Students apply these skills to investigate events, developments, issues, and

phenomena, both historical and contemporary. Each subject has a different way of working. Skills

and strategies for each Humanities and Social Science subject need to be taught explicitly. The type

of questions asked, the information, evidence, and/or data gathered, and the analysis applied will

vary by subject. The subjects taught in Humanities and Social Science classes include: • Introduction

of to world and religion and Belief • General mathematics • Earth and Life science • Discipline and

ideas in social science • Contemporary Philippine arts from the religion •Oral communication

•communication and language research in the Filipino language and Filipino culture • Philippines

politics and governance • Statistics and probability What is HUMSS? Who even needs these studies?

If you think about the nature of humans, you realize that we are all social creatures. Yes, even

introverts are! Humanities and social sciences are essential for our development. Let’s also see why
practical research topics for Humss students are so important. During this crisis COVID-19

pandemic, strengthening communication, transparency and trust is key to proper containment

measures. Communication can help in understanding and tackling fears, misconceptions;

strengthening community participation in addressing faced challenges. A two-way communication

will ensure that there is space to listen to concerns, feedback, myths and rumours about Covid-19

as well as communicating information about the virus.

SYNTHESIS

“This century needs to thrive in attaining a society of innovation, strength, and equipment

for a world with strong camaraderie and technology. But these goals cannot be fulfilled by science

and mathematics alone.” The HUMSS strand is an imperative tool in providing knowledge in the

aspect of liberal arts, for students who desire to expand their understanding in Humanities, and Social

Sciences.

It is further synthesized, how many individuals would consider this strand to be the least complex of

all the strands. This may deter future students from enrolling in the strand because of how it is

presumed.

“These stereotypes have peppered too-many-to-mention movies and tv series when the reality isn’t

as dire as these 1080p works have made them out to be.” Morales, K. (2020) lists the following

preconceptions that are frequently pinpointed when it comes to the subject of this strand. The list

mentioned presented stereotypes that are frequently shown in mainstream media. These

misconceptions can lead to misinterpretation about what the HUMSS strand is like for its students in

subsequent years, as well as what the strand truly delivers and represents.

Moreover, Andin, Z. (2016) found that this restricting mentality also limits the strand’s potential,

“Because humanities and social sciences cover a broad field of interests, the students who are

enrolled in their courses are a mix of people”.

"As a strand, it deals with the historical and contemporary focus, from personal to global contexts,

and considers challenges for the future". Malugao, D. D., & Asis, L. R. (2019) highlights the

significance and intricacies of the HUMSS strand when it comes to modern-day society, establishing

its relevancy in the 21st century.

“The world is now seeking to achieve greatness by monetary solutions to do what the ability of mind

could do. Many education officials spend more on STEM education and less in other categories, but

that isn’t the only important education. Humanities and its broadness is what builds and improves us

as human.” -Institutions and certain professionals still underestimate and fail to see the importance

of studying “soft sciences” as opposed to arithmetic, along with other branches of science. Often

undermining HUMSS students, by coming to a conclusion that students only choose HUMSS as it is

the “easiest” alternative when compared to the other strands.

”Liberal arts is about people who can comprehend the physical world in depth, knowing the

processes and facts in it. People who have the potential to project that knowledge artistically, either

written or spoken. No one has the right to look down and pick on someone who dedicates himself or

herself to something of less appeal.” Francesca Aquino (2020)

Discerning the reasoning behind the relevancy of the HUMSS strand, gives us a valid argument as

to why the study of “unconventional disciplines”. Proves to be essential, all while playing a vital role

within our physical world.

Likewise, former President Ronald Reagan (1987) believed that, “The arts and humanities teach us

who we are and what we can be. They lie at the very core of the culture of which we’re a part.”
