OPEN ENDED LAB PROBLEM

1. Course Code: CE-314

2. Course title: Advanced Engineering Surveying

3. Statement of Problem:

Select any 1KM section of hilly road in KP and Demonstrate whether the current
horizontal and vertical curves are complying with the standards or not, also draw its
layout.

4. Open Ended Lab Attributes:

Students will have to collect the data of the project and have to analyse the data. This
requires clear understanding and knowledge of survey field works.

5. Open Ended Lab/Complex Engg Problem Activities:

Solution of the problem requires utilization of the knowledge of Engineering Surveying in

order to evaluate the task successfully. Students will submit a layout report complete in
all respects including analysis of data.

6. Objectives

Using background information on site situation, student should prepare a proper layout of
the area along with calculations.

7. Assessment Domains

The students will be assessed in Cognitive domain.

S. No. CLO Taxonomy Level PLO

1 Apply the measurement techniques used in C3 1
different surveying methods
2 Prepare detailed drawing of a given area C3 10
based on surveying data.

8. Tasks

The tasks that have to be done is as follows:

 Selection of the area

 Data collection

 Analysis of data, (Manual, Software based)

 Preparing layout

 Submission of Open Ended Lab Report

9. Lab Report Format

The Lab report should include the following sections:

a) Problem Definition/Identification:

This is a statement of the problem to be investigated. It provides overall direction for

problem understanding as well as its incorporation in laboratory investigation. The
student should rephrase the stated problem in his own words that can display his
understanding of the problem.

a) Identification of Strategies:

This should identify different strategies that in your judgement lead towards the solution.
The strategies identified must be clearly supported by steps necessary from performing
them.

b) Equipment to be used :

A list of all laboratory equipment used in the investigation.

c) Data Collection:

This should include the following:

What data is required?

How is the data reported?

d) Procedure :

This should include the following:

 Step by step procedure carefully explained in a numbered/bulleted sequence

 All experimental variables identified and named.

e) Evaluate Outcome of Data Analysis:

This should include the following:

How do you interpret this data?

f) Conclusions:

Discuss any questionable data or surprising results.

Explain the possible source of any error or questionable results.

Suggest changes in the experimental design that might test your explanations.
