Rann Utsav is one of the most eagerly-awaited tourism events of India, which
celebrates the marvels of nature at the White Desert and the rich cultural and artistic
heritage of Kutch. While the White Rann, near the Great Rann of Kutch was written
off as lifeless stretch of land, the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) took
the initiative of introducing ‘White Rann Experience’ to the world in 2005. What
began as a three-day festival progressively evolved into a 100-day celebration at
Dhordo, a village near Rann of Kutch where a whole new tent city has been created,
replete with temporary infrastructure built and rebuilt every year.
Since its inception, the Rann Utsav booking has multiplied exponentially, attracting
over 5,00,000 visitors from 20+ countries.
Although one doesn’t need to book a Rann Utsav package to be able to attend the
festival but they do give guests a festive feel and are an easy way to do away with the
transport and permit issues in the desert.
One can stay at one of the many resorts/homestays in Dhordo or Bherandiala (this
place is famous for its mawa dessert) and still experience the local festival by visiting
the handicraft and food stalls set up in Dhordo village. However, one will not be able
to attend the cultural celebrations inside the gated resorts.

2. Gandhi nu Gaam
The post-earthquake redevelopment of the Gandhi Nu Gam village was carried out
through a holistic, participatory approach that maintained the socio-cultural
traditions and building systems of the local area as well as improving economic
conditions and opportunities.
The project constructed 455 traditional bhungas together with three schools, a grass
bank, community buildings, production centres, religious shrines, the electricity
network and a water harvesting system. Sixty of these dwellings were on a new site
situated centrally among the existing settlements in the area; the remaining dwellings
were in the existing hamlets spread over a 10 km2 area. Each dwelling was provided
with its own individual dual pit latrine system and a bathing cubical.
Saputara
Saputara is a small hill station lying on the border of Maharashtra and Gujarat; this is
a part of the district Dang in Gujarat state. Tourists looking for weekend destination
flock here to enjoy the serene beauty of it. Mostly the tourists from Mumbai, Nasik
and Surat visit here to spend their valuable time with beautiful Saputara lake amid
hills and greenery spread around. This can also be considered as a picnic spot and
you will love to visit this place with your family. As it is a small hill station, all the
visiting points are situated very close to each other. It does not require a lot of time
to be spent in travelling; therefore, one can explore whole Saputara within a day.
Artist Village in Saputara is also popular amongst arts schools that organize
various workshops for teaching their crafts. Students of fine arts often visit the
village to pick the shades of the craft and get hands-on knowledge about the
state of the arts in India. The village also provides simple accommodation for a
very reasonable cost.
