systematically implemented, and carefully evaluated instruction, present environment and
future environment of children with special needs.

2. Enumerate and define the categories of children with special needs. Feature at
least 1 example with picture for each and every category.

3. Distinguish the basic terms in special education from each other:

a. Developmental disability- Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an

impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin
during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last
throughout a person’s lifetime.

b. Syndromea combination of symptoms resulting from a single cause or so commonly occurr
ing together as to constitute a distinct clinical picture.

c. Impairment- pertains to – reduced function or loss of a specific part of the body or organ.
Let’s say the person lost a leg due to an accident. He can wear prosthetics as a replacement
of the lost leg. Disability now refers to the inability to walk. To be able to navigate the
surroundings, the person can use a wheelchair.

d. Handicap- now means that this person faces disadvantages that prevent him or her to
perform a normal role in life, such as not being able to climb stairs anymore. Or run a
marathon. Or be a basketball player. Here is where the environment plays a part. By
providing wheelchair access or lift for the person with physical disability, he or she will
have no problem going up to the next floors of a building. By providing multi-sport events
for athletes with physical disabilities, such as Paralympics, the person will still able to
participate in sports.

e. At risk- – Children who have greater chances than other children to develop a disability.

f. Children with special needs- . Children with special needs may have developmental delays,
medical conditions, psychiatric conditions, and/or congenital conditions. These special
needs require accommodations so children can reach their potential.

g. Children with exceptionalities- A child with exceptionality means a child evaluated in

accordance with the federal and/or state regulations as having: Autism, Deaf /
blind, Developmental delay and Giftedness.
