Desmodur N 3400

Solubility / thinnability Desmodur N 3400 can be thinned with esters, ketones and aromatic
hydrocarbons such as ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, methoxypropylacetate,
acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, toluene,
xylene, solvent naphtha 100 and mixtures thereof.

Generally speaking, it has good compatibility with the solvents listed. However,
the solutions formed must be tested for their storage stability. Only PU grade
solvents should be used (maximum 0.05% water, absence of reactive groups
such as hydroxyl or amino groups). Aliphatic hydrocarbons are unsuitable as
solvents.

Desmodur N 3400 should not be thinned to below a solids content of 40%.

Prolonged storage of a solution with a lower binder content may result in
turbidity and sedimentation.

Compatibility Generally speaking, Desmodur N 3400 can be mixed with the following
products: aliphatic polyisocyanates such as
Desmodur N 100A, N 75A, N 3200A, N 3300A, N 3600 and
Desmodur Z 4470; aromatic polyisocyanates such as
Desmodur L/ultra L, HL and IL/ultra IL; polyester polyols and polyacrylates.
However, the compatibility of the combinations used should always be tested.
Desmodur N 3400 has only limited compatibility with branched polyester
polyols.

Properties / Applications Desmodur N 3400 is used primarily as a reactive thinner or as a

hardener component for lightfast two-component polyurethane coatings and
as a binder for moisture-curing one-component polyurethane coatings. In
two-component systems, Desmodur N 3400 is usually mixed with other
aliphatic polyisocyanates such as Desmodur N 3200A, N 3300A, N 3600 and
Desmodur Z 4470.

Preferred co-reactants are polyacrylate polyols.

In one-component polyurethane systems, Desmodur N 3400 is used as the

sole binder or mixed with other polyisocyanates such as
Desmodur N 3200A and N 3300A.

On account of its low viscosity, Desmodur N 3400 can also be used as the
hardener for aqueous two-component polyurethane coatings.

As with any product, use of Desmodur N 3400 polyisocyanate in a given

application must be tested (including but not limited to field testing) in advance
by the user to determine suitability.

Storage Desmodur N 3400 should be stored in tightly sealed original containers and
protected from moisture, heat, and foreign materials. The product is sensitive
to moisture. Storage at higher temperatures will result in increase of color and
viscosity. Recommended storage temperature is 0º-30ºC.

Storage time Desmodur N 3400 has a shelf life of six months from date of receipt at
customer, provided the material is stored in sealed original containers at the
recommended storage temperature.
