SENTENCE COMPLETION
(PROACTIVE THINKING)
Concept
In our observation, a critical mistake that students end up committing while solving questions of sentence
completion is trying to solve these questions by going through the options and trying to fit the options in the
sentence.
We call this reactive solving and this process leads to students committing avoidable errors. Instead, the
student should consciously follow proactive solving, which is explained below.
Concept
Having seen the process applied to one particular problem, let us now look at the four common types of
sentence structures and some key words, which are the basis of the basic problem types, viz: Cause &
Effect, Reiteration, Similarities/Parallelisms & Contrast.
one is the cause of the other (which then becomes the effect). Needless to say, the two ideas have to be
related to the same principal topic.
Keywords that may indicate cause and effect include: because, as a result, thus, resulting from, hence,
therefore, consequently, causes, leading to, due to.
Concept
Sentences of this type again, will usually have two ideas, one of which clarifies or further supports the
other. The ideas will have the same general meaning, but will be restated in a slightly more explanatory
way. Sometimes, such sentences will also have the reiteration in the form of an explanatory example.
Keywords to identify reiteration type sentences are: in fact, in other words, surely, to be sure, and, namely,
that is, furthermore and likewise.
Concepts
Sentences of this type compare distinct but similar ideas. When choosing a word to fill the blank, you must
look for a word that allows the two ideas of the sentence to be similar in meaning.
Keywords for similarity sentence completions are: likewise, in the same way, for instance, similarly,
furthermore, as, same, just as, specifically, such as, as an example, resembles, like and also.
Concepts
Contrast sentences contain ideas that are opposite to one another or are dissimilar to each other.
Although, but, despite, in spite of, however, as against, as opposed to, whereas, on the contrary, yet, on
the other hand, On the one hand…. On the other, surprisingly, unlike, in contrast, rather, and Even though.
Question: 01
Tharani always wins the debate competition because she works _______ to prepare the topic.
A. lazily
B. hard
C. continually
D. spontaneously
Answer: B
Explanation:
The first part of this sentence describes something - always win the debate competition - that
is caused or influenced by what's described in the second part. Think over it, "What causes to
win the competition?" Only the word "hard" is the correct choice.
The two parts of the sentence are connected by the word "because" that indicates the cause
and effect composition of the sentence.
Question: 02
Sree looks a noble person but he always becomes __________ any good deed.
A. supporter of
B. obstacle for
C. swift to do
D. promoter for
Answer: B

Apparently, noble looking person should do wrong in the 2nd part of the sentence. Hence, the
right choice is "obstacle for".

Although it was not apparent at the time, in _________ we can see how Miles Davis’
performances in the 1970s were _________ by what was happening then in popular music.
A. retrospect, influenced
B. effect, modified
C. fact, unchanged
D. foresight, endangered
Answer: A
Explanation:
The best choice is A retrospect . . . influenced. After reading the sentence, you may decide
that the phrase not apparent at the time would suggest looking back for the first blank and that
the second word needs to be affected. You could read the sentence “Although it was not
apparent at the time, in looking back we can see how Miles Davis’ performances in the 1970s
were affected by what was happening then in popular music.” Now, looking for synonyms for
looking back and affected gives you choice A retrospect . . . influenced.

Surfing was once a sociable pastime, but now joining another surfer on a wave is _________
as heinous as cutting off another driver on the highway.
A. an occasion
B. an offense
C. an adage
D. a discourtesy
Answer: B

The best choice is B an offense. The first clause of the sentence contrasts a time when
surfing was sociable with the present, so the last half of the sentence must describe an
antisocial action. The word but tips off the contrast. Choices B an offense and D a discourtesy
are the only two that contrast with sociable. An offense is the better choice, because a
discourtesy is not strong enough to fit well with heinous (shockingly evil).
