Position Paper CONAS

The Board of Trustees of the Cagayan de Oro Network of Archdiocesan Schools (CONAS) expresses opposition to the opening of a casino in Taboc, Opol, Misamis Oriental. While gambling may be legal, the board is concerned about the moral issues. Gambling poses a risk of addiction, which could lead people to take on debt to continue gambling and neglect their responsibilities. As an entertainment, gambling can seduce people into addiction and financial problems. The board reiterates that addiction from gambling makes people irresponsible and impacts not just themselves but also their dependents.

COMMISSION ON CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Cagayan de Oro Network Archdiocesan Schools (CONAS)
Archbishop’s House, Fernandez St., Cagayan de Oro City

We, the members of the Board of Trustees of the Cagayan de Oro Network of
Archdiocesan Schools (CONAS) of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro would like to
register our opposition to the clandestine opening of a casino outlet in Taboc, Opol, Misamis
Oriental for the following bases and reasons:

1. Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 2413 says on gambling: “Games of

chance (card games, etc.) or wagers are not in themselves contrary to
justice. They become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of
what is necessary to provide for his needs and those of others;”

2. We understand that there’s nothing more to question on the legality of the

opening of the casino considering that this been allegedly believed to have
gone through the legal process and was granted the permission to operate
legally;

3. However, we deal more on the moral aspect of this issue at hand. While it
is true that gambling is a form of entertainment, it can be a potential
avenue for abuse. It might begin as form of entertainment or amusement
only for personal pleasure only but eventually seduce the person into
addiction. Already hooked to it, this will possibly lead an addicted gambler
to avail for fresh loans especially if he/she loses the games. This becomes a
trap which makes him/her already imprisoned by financial obligation.

We, reiterate that, in most cases, gambling makes the person irresponsible over
the needs of other people and even his/her own personal needs especially when already
hooked to addiction. And this what makes gambling not anymore good.

As our collegial stand, we set our hands this 14th day of January in the year of
our Lord twenty twenty-two.
