Key Ideas Main Notes: Step by Step

An angle is measured in degrees and can be classified as acute, right, obtuse, straight, or reflex based on its measure. Acute angles are less than 90 degrees, right angles are 90 degrees, obtuse are greater than 90 but less than 180, straight are 180 degrees, and reflex are greater than 180 but less than 360 degrees. To measure an angle, it should first be classified and then a protractor is used by placing its center on the angle's corner and lining up the baseline with 0 degrees to read the measurement.

Angle Facts

Key Ideas Main Notes

• An angle is a measure of turn, it is measured using a protractor and has the unit degrees ( o).
• Classification of angles is an important skil as not all diagrams are drawn to scale.

Classification of angles:.

• ACUTE angle • RIGHT angle

– Less than 90o – Exactly 90o

• OBTUSE angle • STRAIGHT LINE

– Greater than 90o, Less than 180o – Exactly 180o

• REFLEX angle • FULL TURN

– Greater than 180o, Less than 360o – Exactly 360o

Measuring angles using a protractor:. Step by step

1. Classify the angle you are measuring
2. Place centre of protractor on ‘corner’
of angle.
3. Line up the baseline with 0
4. Read around the protractor and
measure.
5. Use the appropriate scale based upon
your classification.

Important things to note:

• Take a little extra time to classify the
angle you are dealing with • Always double check your angle measurements.
• If reflex, measure smaller angle first (measure twice).
and subtract from 180o.
