Introduction To Computers Part 2
To Double Click
means to press and
release the left
button twice in quick
succession. This
procedure opens a
program / window.
• Cursor / Pointer

Allows you to enter data
Using the Keyboard
• Type and Press are terms associated with
using the keyboard
– Pressing a key means – to hit the key once
– Typing means to enter data by pressing a
series of keys
• The Enter Key allows you to execute a
command or move the cursor to the next
line

• After the computer boots the log on screen
appears:

Task Bar

Using the Start Button to Open Internet Explorer
1. Click Start
2. Point (Highlight) on
Programs
3. Move the mouse to
the right then move
down/up and click
on Internet
Explorer
Once a Program is selected it is
opened in a new window

Button
• Title Bar – tells you the name of the
Programme that you are running / the name
of the window that is opened
• The Minimize Button – allows you to
temporarily close the window while the
programme is still running (the window
appears as a button on the task bar).
• The Maximize Button – allows you to make
the screen bigger so that it fills up the entire
screen. When the window is maximized the
button changes to a Restore button.
• The Restore Button – allows you to change
the window back to its original size
• The Close Button – allows you to exit from
a programme or close a window .
Manipulating a Window
• To minimize a window
– Place your mouse pointer on the minimize button and click once
– The window should disappear from the screen and appear as a
button on the task bar
– The window can be restored by clicking the button on the task bar
• To maximize a window
– Place your mouse pointer on the maximize button and click once
– The window should fill the screen
• To restore a window
– Place your mouse pointer on the restore button and click once
– The window should go back to its original size
• To close a window
– Place your mouse pointer on the close button and click once
– The window will disappear from the screen.
Activity- Manipulating Windows
• Use the Start button to Open Internet Explorer
• Minimize the window
– Observe what happens and discuss with the person beside you
– Discuss what can be done in order to make the window appear on
the screen once more.
– Be prepared to tell the class what was discussed in your group
• What is the name of the button that you are seeing beside
your minimize button?
– When called upon share your answer with the class
– If it is the maximize button then maximize the window
– If it is the restore button restore the window
– Observe what happens and discuss with the person beside you
• Discuss with your neighbour what must be done in order to
exit from or close the window.
– Close the window
Opening a Window using the
Desktop Icon
• Move your mouse pointer to the Icon
• Double Click the Icon
– This should cause the programme to open as
a window
Practice Activity
• Use the Internet Explorer desktop Icon to open
Internet Explorer
• Minimize the window
• Use the My Computer desktop Icon to open My
Computer
• Minimize the window
– Discuss with you neighbour what you observe
• What can you do to get back the Internet
Explorer window on the screen?
– Be prepared to answer when called upon
• Restore both Windows and close them
Shutting Down the Computer
• Shutting Down a computers means closing all
programmes and turning off the computer.
• Before shutting down, ensure that all
programmes/ windows are closed.
To Shut Down :
1. Click Start
2. Click Shut Down
3. A dialogue box will
appear

• If it is not, Click the
drop down arrow
and Click the down
arrow and select
shut down.
