BACKGROUND
Rest, Read & Refresh - An Auto-Rickshaw Stand Design competition is organized by the Department of
Sociology, SPPU, Pune and PVPCoA, Pune as part of an Action Research Project titled, 'Let's Make our
City Smart' lead by Dr. Shruti Tambe and supported by राष्ट्रीय उच्चतर शिक्षा अशियान [RUSA]. This Research
Project involved a survey of 2000 respondents from different wards of PMC and PCMC. The study is now
in its third phase, through planning of action programmes with various stakeholders [communities,
activists, NGOs etc.] of Smart City. Aim of this programme is to create awareness about people and
community centered space design and to make neighbourhoods safe through community ownership
and participation.

This competition is delineated from specific objectives of the above-mentioned Research Project to
design for Social Sustainability in the form of public infrastructure – An Auto-Rickshaw Stand.

How can “SMART” also be socially sustainable?

Auto-rickshaws stand out as quintessential iconic elements among the myriad vehicles on Indian streets.
They are a convenient and mostly affordable mobility option fulfilling the need for last-mile connectivity
to and from public transport nodes. They are a boon for people living in dense urban areas but are also
looked down upon as an intrusion on congested streets. Their drivers face a lot of flak due to general
perception and their portrayal in popular media, often associated with refusals, overcharging, rude
behavior and so on.

CONTEXT
Auto-Rickshaw drivers work hard to earn a livelihood in difficult conditions exposing
themselves to pollution, noise, traffic congestion and even threat to their lives. Variable and
mostly long working hours, no means of fixed income, no formal support system, irregularity
of meals and bad posture while driving add to the troubles faced by them. Every day is a
challenge for these drivers, most of whom do not even own the rickshaw they drive. With
increasing cost of living in Indian cities, more women drivers are entering this sector. Though
it may be empowering, they are still dependent for basic needs like clean restrooms and
safety measures. The unions of rickshaw drivers are certainly trying hard for decades to
negotiate with State and Society to get their issues heard.
The daily realities and operational problems faced by the drivers are seldom addressed in
our media and overlooked by policy makers, yet they continue to be good samaritans
especially in trying times. Many of them volunteer free of cost rides to the poor and the
needy, deliver groceries and help in whatever way they can with a smile on their faces and
a pinch to their pockets as witnessed during COVID times.
