INTRODUCTION
A hydraulic pump or water pump is a generating machine that transforms the energy with which it is driven (usually mechanical energy) into
the hydraulic energy to move an incompressible fluid. As the energy of the fluid increases, the pressure, speed or head of the fluid increases
too, since they are related according to Bernoulli’s principle. In general, a pump is used to increase the pressure of a liquid, adding energy
to the hydraulic system to move the fluid from a lower pressure zone to a higher pressure zone.
The shape of the impeller determines the type of pump and provides specific characteristics. The most common types of pumps, according
to the impeller, are the positive displacement or volumetric pumps and the rotodynamic pumps:
- The volumetric pumps (gear pumps, piston pumps, screw pumps, etc.) confine a finite volume of fluid between their mechanical
components and, once the fluid is tightly enclosed, they displace or impel it towards the higher pressure area. Therefore, in this type
of pumps there is a clearly defined physical border between the high pressure and low pressure areas.
- The rotodynamic pumps (axial pumps, diagonal pumps, centrifugal pumps, etc.) achieve the pressure increment by forcing the fluid
to move through the divergent ducts found between the vanes of the runner due to the effect of the centrifugal force to which the
fluid is subjected with the rotation of the runner or impeller. As a consequence, in this type of pumps there is no clearly defined
physical border between the high pressure and low pressure areas, but the pressure increases progressively as the fluid advances.
The Computer Controlled Centrifugal Pump Bench, “PBCC”, has been designed to obtain the most important characteristics curves and
parameters of a centrifugal pump. The centrifugal pump is the machine most commonly used to move liquids from one place to another.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Computer Controlled Centrifugal Pump Bench, “PBCC”, is a bench-top unit consists of a centrifugal
pump computer controlled, a feed water tank, circulation pipes, regulation valves, as well as the
enough control elements for the pump experiments: two pressure sensors and a flow sensor.
A frequency inverter for the pump, computer controlled, provides the possibility of regulation and
measuring the pump motor speed, as well as the measurement of the torque transferred.
The pump is installed in a pipes system which avoids the permanent water spending during the operation
because it is a closed circuit.
The Computer Controlled Centrifugal Pump Bench, “PBCC”, unit has instrumentation and sensors to
allow the measurement, from the computer, of the most typical parameters of the centrifugal pump:
- Speed motor.
- Total impelled flow.
- The admission and discharge pressure.
- Torque.
- Calculated values:
Total height.
Hydraulic and mechanic power. PBCC detail
Efficiency.
This Computer Controlled Unit is supplied with the EDIBON Computer Control System (SCADA), and includes: The unit itself + a
Control Interface Box + a Data Acquisition Board + Computer Control, Data Acquisition and Data Management Software Packages, for
controlling the process and all parameters involved in the process.

Faults Simulation System (FSS) is a Software package that simulates
several faults in any EDIBON Computer Controlled Unit. It is useful for
Technical and Vocational level.
The “FAULTS” mode consists in causing several faults in the unit
normal operation. The student must find them and solve them.
There are several kinds of faults that can be grouped in the following
sections:
Faults affecting the sensors measurement:
- An incorrect calibration is applied to them.
- Non-linearity.
Faults affecting the actuators:
- Actuators channels interchange at any time during the program
execution.
- Response reduction of an actuator.
Faults in the controls execution:
- Inversion of the performance in ON/OFF controls.
- Reduction or increase of the calculated total response.
- The action of some controls is annulled.
