Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who should I ask to write a letter of recommendation?
A: You should ask someone who has experienced your nonprofit's work firsthand. Consider
asking donors, board members, program constituents, peers, or prominent community
members.

Q: What should I ask for in my letter?

A: You should ask your letter writer to summarize her or his history with your nonprofit and
include examples of its impact in the community. Ask the writer to include the date and her or
his contact information. If a grantor asks for a letter, send one that has been written within
the last three months.

Q: How should I ask someone to write a letter of reference for my nonprofit?

A: You should ask however you feel most comfortable! It's a good idea to provide an outline of
your request in writing, so the writer has a solid understanding of what you need and why.

I hope everything is well. I am writing to inquire if you would be willing to write a letter of
recommendation for my organization ________________.

We are currently applying for a grant and need to demonstrate our positive impact in the
community. If you are willing to write the letter, could you include positive stories about our
partnership and programs? Additionally, will you date and sign the letter?

We would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for your consideration. We are very proud
of our partnership with you and look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Best,

Dear ________________,

We are writing this letter to highly recommend partnerships with ________________.

Throughout our three years of working with this organization, we have been impressed with
their unwavering commitment to their community and the quality of their programs.

Last year, we had the opportunity to collaborate with this organization for a three-month
long community improvement project. During that time, we provided 3,000 lunches to
students from low-income families. We also held three workshops about nutrition and more
than 400 children participated.

This organization has been a joy to work with and is having a positive impact in our
community. Their staff and board is organized, passionate, and dedicated to helping others.

Please reach out should you have any additional questions regarding this organization. You
can reach us at ________________ (email) or ________________ (phone number).
