MODULE MATH 10 q2 w1

This document discusses illustrating polynomial functions. It defines a polynomial function as an equation with terms in decreasing powers of x where the coefficients are real numbers and the highest power term's coefficient is not zero. The document contains activities to identify polynomial functions, sketch graphs of polynomial functions of varying degrees, and solve word problems involving polynomial functions.

MODULE 11: ILLUSTRATING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION

In this lesson you will learn to:

illustrates polynomial functions;

EXPLORE!
Lesson 3.1.1 will start your week by assessing your knowledge of the different
mathematics concepts previously studied and your skills in performing
mathematical operations. These knowledge and skills may help you in illustrating
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS. To find the answer, perform each activity. If you find any
difficulty in dealing with the activity and the lesson there are some sites that you
can access with.

ACTIVITY 1: WHAT AM I!
DIRECTION: Solve the given word problem below. To define what polynomial function is.
Show your solution.

Martha decides to use a 30 cm by 24 cm cardboard to make a box where she

can store her computer accessories. By cutting out squares of the same size from
each corner and bending the sides up, she wants to form a box that can occupy
space of 1400 cm 3. How large a should be cut from each corner?

Were you able to analyze the word problem? Did you make an illustration based from
your analysis? The solution you came up is called a POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION

FIRM-UP! FIRM-UP!

The goal in this section is to learn and understand key concepts of illustrating
polynomial functions.
DISCUSSION:

A polynomial function in one variable x, is defined by an equation of the form

𝑃 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 + 𝑎𝑛 −1 𝑥 𝑛−1 + 𝑎𝑛 −2 𝑥 𝑛−2 + ⋯ + 𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎0 , where
a. the leading coefficients 𝑎0 , 𝑎1 , 𝑎2 … , 𝑎𝑛 represent real numbers;
b. the leading coefficient 𝑎𝑛 ≠ 0; and
c. 𝑛, 𝑛 − 1, 𝑛 − 2, … represent non negative integers.

The algebraic expression 𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 + 𝑎𝑛 −1 𝑥 𝑛−1 + 𝑎𝑛 −2 𝑥 𝑛−2 + ⋯ + 𝑎1 𝑥 + 𝑎0 is a polynomial in one

variable x of degree n.

1. Which of these are polynomial function?

a. 𝑓 𝑥 = 5𝑥 4 − 3𝑥 2 − 2

1
b. 𝑔 𝑥 = 𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 + 4

solution:
a. This is a polynomial function because 𝑓 𝑥 = 5𝑥 4 − 3𝑥 2 − 2, is a polynomial
expression in x.
b. This is NOT a polynomial function.
1 1
Since = 𝑥 −3 , the exponent of x is a negative integer. Hence, + 𝑥 2 + 4 is
𝑥3 𝑥3
not a polynomial expression in x.

Which of these are polynomial functions? And explain

1
a. 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 5 + 10

2 1
b. 𝑔 𝑥 = 5 𝑥 6 − 2 𝑥 3
In the previous years of your study in algebra, we sketched accurate graphs
of polynomial function of degrees 0,1, and 2. The table below gives a summary of
these graphs.

In this section, we will graph polynomial functions of degree greater than 2.let us
examine the behaviour of the graphs of the following function by first assigning values
for x, then computing for y.

ACTIVITY 2: SKETCH ME!

DIRECTION: Sketch the graph of the following polynomial functions.

a. 𝑓 𝑥 = −2𝑥 4

1
b. 𝑓 𝑥 = 2 𝑥 4

Were you able to sketch the graph? What have you noticed on the behaviour of the
graph?

DEEPEN!
Your goal in this section is to take a closer look at some aspects of the topic. You
are going to think deeper and test further your understanding on illustrating
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION.

ACTIVITY 3: WRITTEN MATH

In this activity, you will answer different problems involving Polynomial

Function. Grab your book, paper and ball pen. Place your solutions on a long
bond paper and attached it at the end of your module.

DIRECTION: Answer each problem. Show your solution.

TRANSFER! TRANSFER!
Your goal in this section is to apply your learning to real life situations by doing
activities which will help you in making your final output. You will be given a
practical task which will demonstrate your understanding and creativity.

ACTIVITY 4: APPLY ME!

To compare two graphs, we sketch both in one Cartesian plane in order to
see how the corresponding y-values in the two functions compare, given the same x
value.

In the same manner, How do you know who is taller between two
students? How do you know which is better deal between two options/offer?
