Adding Integers Examples

Positive + Positive = Positive


3 + 5 = 8
Positive + Negative = Positive if positive
number is larger
-3 + 5 = 2
Negative if negative
number is larger
3 + (-5) = -2
Negative + Negative = Negative
-3 + (-5) = -8

Subtracting Integers Examples


To subtract integers, change the subtraction
3 – 9 = 3 + (-9)
sign to an addition sign. Then change the sign
of the number that follows the new addition 5 – (-4) = 5 + 4
sign. Finally follow the rules for addition.
Multiplying Integers Examples
Positive x Positive = Positive
1 x 2 = 2
Positive x Negative = Negative
1 x (-2) = -2
Negative x Negative = Positive
-1 x (-2) = 2

Dividing Integers Examples


Positive ÷ Positive = Positive
8 ÷ 4 = 2
Positive ÷ Negative = Negative
8 ÷ (-4) = -2
Negative ÷ Negative = Positive
-8 ÷ (-4) = 2
