PARTICIPATE AND ASSIST

What five problems have you identified from the words that you have encircled/ make a
statement. Write in the below space.

Reading Difficulty
Modules
Lack
Connectivity
COVID

The problems I identified are:

1. Reading Difficulty is the one factor that lead to reading failure, that the student has a poor of
reading comprehension.
2. Some of the students are hard answering their modules if face in pandemic situation need the
support of their parents.
3. Lack. To specific, lack of family support is also affecting the confidence of one’s student to boost
their biggest potential.
4. these is the biggest factor in all situation need connectivity to each other to communicate, find
information. Also need student to connect the teacher.
5. This is the main problem of the world the COVID-19. All aspects in the world had stop because of
this pandemic that bring happened today. Especially in education mode today got modular learning
or blended learning instead of face to face learning, because of COVID all situation has reformed.

Excellent! Let us see how we can assist and learn at the same time.
Suppose, the problem you have spotted is; COMPREHENSION.
How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty in
comprehension?
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Make a choice your ACTION.

A. Conduct a tutorial lesson.
B. Show video lessons to help enhance comprehension.
C. Make a learning task to develop comprehension.
Suppose you chose letter A. Conduct a Tutorial. So you have identified the SOLUTION that
matches the PROBLEM which is Difficulty in Comprehension.

The problem is: The action is:

Difficulty in Comprehension of Conduct a Tutorial

Reading

The Action is:

Directly teach comprehension skill
Teach vocabulary skill
Teach write a summary of what read
Have student’s practice reciprocal
teaching
Target all comprehension of language

Can you also choose letter B: Show video lesson as a SOLUTION for the same PROBLEM?
Explain.

The problem is: The action is:

Difficulty in comprehension of Show video lessons

What about letter C as a SOLUTION to the same PROBLEM? Why?

The problem is: The action is:

Difficulty in comprehension of Make learning tasks to improve

reading comprehension

Strategies to improve Reading Comprehension to help

students
1. Have them read aloud.
2. Provide books at right level.
3. Reread to build fluency.
4. Talk to the teacher.
5. Supplement their class reading.
6. Talk about what they’re reading.

Interesting, isn’t it? Now, you can assist your mentor by identifying observed
problems in the class and suggest actions to be done.

NOTICE

What you have notice of the identified above? Can there be more than one solution to the
problem? Explain
Yes, I Realized that there are multiple solutions to the problem. There numerous options
available. I believe that every teacher should consider how to solve the problem of difficult
in comprehension. Should not solely focus on one answer, but rather seek out a more
effective solution every student’s learning.
A creative and innovative teacher can find one or more the one solution or answer to the same
problem. Each solution matches with the problem. The more solution identified to choose from,
the better for an action researcher.

ANALYZE

Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This scenario
might also be similar to the class you have observed and notice.

Scenario A: Miss Fely is a grade four in a typical elementary school. She learners in her class.
One half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates and invertebrates and observed. She has
been the same science lesson for two weeks, yet no progress was observed. This situation has been
bothering Miss Fely.

 Can you have identified, Miss Fely’s problem?

 The problem is that half of them are unable to categories. She has been dividing
animals into vertebrates and invertebrates for a long time, and she has been
repeating the same science. Despite teaching for two weeks, little progress was
seen.

 Can you find a solution to solve her problem? Give your two suggestions.
a. Experiment with different teaching methods, such and scheduling time to wander
around and let pupils to watch.
b. Avoid yes/ no questions and encourage your students to reflect and think more
deeply.
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

 What solution can solve Miss Fely’s problem?

How? Both of the suggest solution, in my opinion are effective. Try different teaching
methods, such as scheduling time to walk around and allowing students to observe.
That’s way, you are providing opportunities to all kids who are having difficulty
understanding your topic, and I believe that observing outside can aid in the
understanding of science topic.

Are they matched with the problem?

 Yes, and it is definitely effective.

Scenario B: Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantages urban community. Most of his learners come
from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their guardians who stand only
as parents. They are deprived of the necessary food, clothing and shelter.

 Can you the most probable teaching- learning problem/ in the class of Sir
Ryan?
a. Student’s poor performance as a result of financial difficulties.
b. Because of troubles at home, they find it difficult to concentrate in class.

 Can you propose a solution to solve of the problems that you have identified?
 If I could provide additional assistance, such as food or donations from other
teachers, I would, and I will also inform the Barangay officials of the
problems are inquiring about the embedded programs that are being
developed to address the situation. It is critical to resolve this issue because it
will have an impact on the students’ future.

REFLECT

After reading the two scenarios given above, how would identifying problematic situation
and finding to these problems help you to become a better teacher?
Explain:
Finding learning about each student’s background, need, and things is an important part
of the teacher’s work. They believe that this will have an impact on their growth. If a lesson
runs smoothly, I believe it would be better. From the start, the teacher does a background

check to determine the needs of the incoming pupil. Assessment, pre- and post-test are also
available to determine a student’s abilities and to reach them how to earn money.
Something the teacher will utilize to teach them the skill they need to master.

WRITE ACTION RESEARCH PROMPTS

Using any example of problem in this activity, answer the AR prompts that follow:

OBSERVE

What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?

 Financial difficulties make it difficult for students to focus on their studies, which
has an impact on their learning.

REFLECT

What changes do you want to achieve?

 I want my students to be more productive and motivated to learn new things and
explore what they’ve learned.

PLAN

What strategies will you use to improve the situation?

 Create some activities where kids can learn, reflect, and explore in a way that is
fun for them. They must be inventive, yet they do not require expensive
materials.

WORK ON MY ARTIFACTS

Your artifact will be an Abstract of a completed Action Research.

I. Title of Action Research:

Improving Reading Comprehension Through the use of Higher Order Thinking

Activities

I. Author/s:

Noel R. Dauran

II. Abstract:

The area of focus for my project is improving Reading Comprehension Through the Use of
Higher Order Thinking Skill Activities. Without the solid foundation of reading skill the
researcher feels the children will be struggle hard throughout their schooling and adult life. By
learning the best comprehension strategies and how to best teach these strategies to the pupils,
the researcher hopes to provide the solid foundation needed to succeed. Although the school's
NAT result has met or exceeds its expectation, still the researcher has a thought of a way to
improve it. In reading class, the grade three pupils Scored84o, but the scores dropped in the 4th
grade. So the researcher concludes that the pupils score decreases because of the pupils have very
poor higher order thinking skills to increase reading test scores and develop meaningful reading
experience to the pupils.

III. Identify the Problem in the study:

As the researcher of this research, I have found out that many of my pupils in grade Il are able
to read fluently, but still have difficulty in answering the "how" and "why" questions. I am
hoping that by incorporating higher order thinking skills my pupils would be able to transfer
and make connections to reading. This is important in order for a child to be successful. I feel
that incorporating reading strategies and showing students how to reflect about what they have
read, would improve their reading comprehension and to become life-long learners. I am

looking forward to working on this area of concern, and sharing my findings with my co-
teachers.

IV. Identify the Action Taken in the study

The Metacoprehension Strategy Index had a total of 25 questions divided into three parts that
asked about the strategies pupils used to help them better understand the story. Part I of MSI is
consist of statement about the strategies used prior to reading a story, Part II of the MSI consist
of statement about the strategies used while reading a story, and the part III of the MSI consist
of statement about the strategies used after reading the story.
