Q2: A single-stage, single-acting air compressor running at 1000 rev/min delivers air at
25 bar. For this purpose the induction and free air conditions can be taken as 1.013
bar and -26 ˚C, and the suction volume its 0.25 m3/min. The clearance volume is 3%
of the swept volume and the stroke/bore ratio is 1.2/ 1. Calculate:
1) Swept Volume.
2) The bore and stroke.
3) Temperature rise.
4) The volumetric efficiency.
5) The indicated power.
Take the index of compression and re-expansion as 1.3.
Solution:
1- Swept volume = Vp = V1 – V3 3 2

Q3: The catalog for a refrigerant 134a, six-cylinder, hermetic compressor operating at
29 r/s. a condensing temperature of 40 C and an evaporating temperature of -4 C
shows a refrigeration capacity of 115 kw. At this operating point the motor (whose
efficiency is 90 percent) draws 34.5 kW. The bore of the cylinders is 87 mm and the
piston stroke is 70 mm. The performance data are based on 8 ˚C of subcooling of the
liquid leaving the condenser. Compute (a) the actual volumetric efficiency and (b) the
compression efficiency.
Solution:
