FAILURE THEORIES
Failure theories listed below:
I. Maximum Principal Strain Theory
II. Maximum Principal Stress Theory
III. Maximum Shear Stress Theory
IV. Maximum Strain Energy Theory
V. Internal Friction Theory
VI. Distortion Energy Theory
VII. Octahedral Shear-Normal Stress Theory [1]
1. Maximum Principal Strain Theory
This theory states that when the principal strain maximum value in a body crosses the strain
value limit, that is the strain value at the yielding point of the corresponding material, it fails at
that point. This theory is also known as Saint Venant Theory as it is proposed by Saint Venant.
The failure condition is written as:
Maximum Principle strain in a body > corresponding value of strain to the yield point of
the material. [2]
2. Maximum Principal Stress Theory
The maximum principal stress theory states that a material fails when it is subjected to
multiaxial stresses and maximum principal stress in any of the component of the material exceeds
the local strength. This theory is stated by Rankine.
For the design aspect the Maximum Principal Stress should not exceed the working stress for the
material. [3]
3. Maximum Shear Stress Theory
This theory states that when the maximum shear stress the complex system reaches the
maximum value of maximum shear stress in simple tension at the elastic limit. This theory is
presented by Coulomb Guest’s or Treasca’s Theory.
Mathematically it can be written as:
This theory gives good results in case of experiments done on ductile materials. In the cases
where the case represents pure shear this theory does not give accurate results.
4. Maximum Strain Energy Theory
Maximum Strain Energy Theory states that the failure of a material occurs when the total
strain energy in the material reaches the total strain energy of the material at the elastic limit in
simple tension.
In a 3D stress system, the strain energy per unit volume is given by
At the point of failure
In 2D stress system the Above equation reduce to:
5. Maximum Shear Strain Energy Theory or Distortion Energy Theory
This theory states that the elastic failure occurs when the shear strain energy per unit
volume in the stressed material reaches a value equal to the shear strain energy per unit volume at
the elastic limit point in tension. This theory was proposed by Von Mises Henky. The theory gives
best results for ductile materials particularly in case of pure shear.
Shear strain energy per unit volume due to principal stresses is given by:
