This is a summary of the article “The role of research proposals in business and

management education” written by “Martyn Denscombe” published in “The International

Journal of Management Education.”

This article discovers the applications of research proposals within business and
management education. Various learning objectives, future prospective, benefits and
limitations of research proposals are discussed and evaluated; while focusing on learning
perspective being primary concern for students.

1. Introduction
Research proposals are recognized as basic ingredient of business and management
education, to be carried out by undergraduate to doctorate level students. Traditionally
ingredients of research proposal are more emphasized rather than considering its
objectivity and as a learning tool. This article provides framework for the unconsidered
potential of research proposals to discover new prospects.

2. The functions of research proposals

Research proposal serves as comprehensive framework that self explains how research will
be carried out, by addressing several functions of research like planning (what and how it
will be done, time bound), goal setting (deliverables and targets) especially funds gathering,
evaluating (investigating quality of research proposed and eliminating ethical issues, if any).

Aforesaid three functions validate the legitimacy of research outcomes but a fourth
unaddressed aspect, Research Training, may also serves auxiliary role in order to make
research proposal a practical learning experience in context of business and management
education.

3. The role of research training for business and management students

Research study is the part and parcel of business and management education subjective to
the level of study; provides foundation for knowledge including business & management studies.
Its comprehensive apprehension is anticipated from business and management students.

The impact of research, from learning point, differs with the level of education due to
varying objectivity of producing knowledge i.e. knowledge acquisition, understanding underlying
themes and development of new knowledge for bachelors, masters and doctorate level
respectively; based on type of study conducted.

Understanding of research methodology and producing influential result is imperative for

students to work by themselves and know the inside out of the research.
4. Learning through experience: the benefits
Despite the text-book learning about methodology, practical research provides hands on
experience; to the bachelors, masters and doctorate students of business and management
education; to responsibly produce knowledge through creating better understanding,
applied approach and discussing practical aspects of learning. Learning through experience
helps enhancing managerial skills and develops critical thinking.

5. Learning through experience: the problems

Besides advantages of learning through research, it may cause serious implications like
research governance and ethical approval unless strong accountability is not applied.
Another repercussion is of appropriate level of researcher’s training of how to conduct
research, subject to the level of education, is compulsory. Maturity of thought process is
essential to access, process and analyze the right data with right tools correctly. Use of
primary data as research tool may be more suitable, for students, in some fields provided
they are properly equipped with its proper knowledge under expert’s supervision. It will
make the research more productive with less mistakes and producing fruitful results.

6. Learning through research proposals – their educational potential

Answering the seven basic questions lay logical foundation to causal research activity that
broaden the intellectual canvas of researcher making it understandable to everyone by
following the standardized pattern. Literary skill of constructing a narrative, credible
background knowledge to disseminate the findings and to express the potential impacts of
the research, through specific precise indicators, is ultimately desirable. Description and
justification of the proposed methodology should be considered by understanding the
proposed methodology (What data, when and where will be collected). Acknowledging the
limitations or self- evaluation of the research study; about its limitations and delimitations
is anticipated. Research ethics like consent, avoidance of harm, confidentiality and
beneficence should be religiously practiced. The need for precision, rigor and clarity in
research and a holistic vision of research activity if inevitably desired.
7. Discussion
Empirical research; primary data collection; people-based data; minimal resources; student
as the principal researcher; specified time scale; need to be weighed against the potential
benefits of substituting the production of a research proposal for the hands-on experience
of doing a research project.
8. Conclusion
Presenting a feasible research design for investigating a particular topic with knowledge
about the strategies and methods used with relative strengths and weaknesses keeping in
view the professional sensitivity and presentational skills are necessary to conduct the
impact making research.

Constructing a research proposal can constitute a learning exercise that is of value in its
own right that can help students to understand the principles of research methodology and
their application.
