Solve the following problems. Write your answer on the space provided below.
1. In five trials of walking along a 90-m course on a fairly level ground, a pacer for a survey
party counted 51, 52.5, 51.5, 52.5, and 51.5 strides respectively. He then started walking an
unknown distance XY in four trials which were recorded as follows: 88.5, 89, 88, and 87 strides.
Determine the following:
a) Pace factor of the pacer
SOLUTION:
Given:
L = 90m
N1 = 5
SUM1 = (51+52.5+51.5+52.5+51.5)
= 259 strides or 518 paces
518
M1 = SUM1 / n1 = = 103.6 paces
5
90
PF = L / M1 = = 0.869 m/ paces
103.6
c) Percentage of error in the measurement. If the taped length in the measurement if the
taped length of XY is 150.5 meters.
SOLUTION:
Given:
TD = 150.5m
PD = 153.2m
Percentage Error = (TD-PD / TD)(100%)
= (150.5 – 153.2 / 150.5)(100%)
= 1.79%
2. A 50 m tape was standardized and was found to be 0.0042 m too long than the standard length
at an observed temperature of 58℃ and a pull of 15 kilos. The same tape was used to measure a
certain distance and was recorded to be 673.92 m long at an observed temperature of 68℃ and a
pull of 15 kilos. Coefficient of linear expansion is 0.0000116 m /℃.
GIVEN:
T2 = 58⁰C
Ct = 0.0042 m
L = 50 m.
K = 0.0000116 m/⁰C
673.92(0.01)
Total Correction =

3. A 30 m steel tape is 2 mm too long at 20℃ with a pull of 55 N. A rectangle is measured with
this tape. The sides are recorded as 144.95 m and 113.00 m. The average temperature during the
measurement is 30℃ with a pull of 55 N. Use coefficient of expansion of steel tape as a
0.0000116 m /℃.
GIVEN:
Length of tape L=30m
Extra length of tape,
ΔL=2mm
ΔL=2x10-3m
T=20°
ΔT=30°-20°
ΔT=10°
l=144.95m
b=113m
Pull=55kn
=0.0000116/°C
Breadth
b’= b x L } over {L¿
113 x 30.00548
b’=
30
b’=113.02064m
True Area
A’=l’ x b’
A’= 144.9765 x 113.02064
A’= 16385.334m2
Therefore, the true area is equal to 16385.334m2.
c) What is the error in area in sq. m.
Area
A=l x b
A=114.95 x 113m2
Error in Area
ΔA=A’- A
ΔA=16385.334 – (114.95 x 113)
ΔA=5.983m2
4. A baseline was measured using a 100 m tape which is standardized at 15℃ with a standard
pull of 10 kg. The recorded distance was found out to be 430.60 meters. At the time of
measurement, the temperature was 20℃ and the pull exerted was 16 kg. The weight of one cubic
cm of steel is 7.86 g weight of tape is 2.67 kg. , E = 2 x 106kg/cm2, K= 7 x 107 m℃
Given:
LT = 100 m T1 = 15°C
T2 = 20°C P1 = 10 kg
TD = 430.60 m P2 = 20 kg
W = 2.67 kg E = 2x10⁶ kg/cm²
k = 7x10⁻⁷ m/°C A =?
Unit weight of steel = 7.86 gr. per cu. Cm
d2 = 2,395.842m –¿
d2 = 1,311.292m
D= d1 + d2
D= 2,395.842m + 1,311.292m
D= 3,707.134
