Chapter 11
1. A brass ring of 20cm diameter is to be mounted on a metal rod of 20.02cm diameter at
20OC. To what temperature should the ring be heated? (For brass =1.9×10–5 C–1)
2. A 100gm copper block is heated in boiling water for ten minutes and then it is dropped into
150gm of water at 30OC in a 200gm calorimeter if the temperature of water is raised to
33.6OC, determine the specific heat of the material of the calorimeter (For copper S =
386JKg–1C–1).
3. Calculate the density of hydrogen gas, considering it to be an ideal gas, when the root mean
square velocity of hydrogen molecules is 1850ms–1 at 0OC and 1 atmospheric pressure. (1
atmospheric pressure = 1.01×105 N.m–2).
4. Find the RMS speed of nitrogen molecules at 27OC. Given the mass of nitrogen molecule to
be 4.67×10–20kg = 1.38.10–23 joule / K).
5. A heat engine performs 100 joules of work and at the same time rejects 4000 joules of heat
energy to the cold reservoir. What is the Efficiency of the engine? If the difference of
temperature b/w the sink and the source of this engine is 75OC, find the temperature of its
source.
Chapter 12
6. How may electrons should be removed from each of the two similar sphere, each of 10gm, so
that electrostatic repulsion is balanced by the gravitational force:
(G = 6.673×10–11 N – m2 1kg2, k = 9x9 N – m2/c2)
7. A small sphere of weight 5×10N is suspended by a silk thread which is attached to a point
on a large changed insulting plane. When a charge of 6×10–8C is placed on the ball the
thread makes an angle of 30OC with the vertical, find the charge density on the plane ( =
8.85×10–12C2/N–m2)
8. A capacitor 200pF is charge to a P.D. of 100 volts. Its plates are connected in parallel to
another capacitor and is found that the P.D. b/w the plates falls to 60 volts. What is the
capacitor of the second capacitor?
9. Two charges of +2µC and -5 µC are placed at a distance of 50 cm from each other find the
point on the line joining there centers where the electric field become zero.
Calculate the potential difference b/w two plates when they are separated by a distance of
0.005m and are able to hold and electron motionless b/w them.
(e = 1.6 x 10-19c, m = 9.11 = 10–31kg)
Chapter 13
10. A 50ohm resistor is required from a copper wire. 0.2 mm in diameter. What is the length of
the wire needed?( = 1.6×10–8–m)
11. A battery of 24V is connected to a 10 load and a current of 2.2amp is drawn find the
internal resistance of the battery and its terminal voltage.
12. The resistance of a copper wire is 1.27 at 20OC. Find its resistance at 100OC. The
temperature coefficient of resistivity of copper is  = 0.0039OC–1.

13. A long solenoid is wound with 35 turns in 10cm, and caries a current of 10A find the
magnetic field in it. (O = 4 ×10–7 W / Am)
14. How fast must a proton of mass 1.67×10–27 kg be moving if it is to follow a circular path of
radius 2.0cm in a magnetic field of 0.7 Tesla? (m p = 1.67×–27kg)
15. A coil of 50 turns is wound on an iron frame 3cm x6cm which rotates in a magnetic field of
induction B = 2web/m2. What will be the torque acting on it if a current of 5amp passed
through it and the plane of the coil makes an angle of 45 O with the field?
16. A coil having an are of cross section 0.05 m–2 and number of turns 100 is placed
perpendicular to the magnetic field of induction 0.08 Weber/m2. How much EMF will be
induced in it if the field is reduced to 0.02 in 0.01 sec?

17. An aero plane is flying in a region where the vertical component of earth’s magnetic field is
3.2 ×10–4 T. if the wing span of the aero plane is 50m and its velocity is 360km/hour find
the potential difference b/w the tips of the wings of aero plane.
18. A 500 turn coil in an A.C. Generator having an area of 100cm rotates in a magnetic field of
value 50 Tesla. In order to generate 220 volts maximum, how fast is the coil to be rotated?
Express you answer in terms of the number of revolutions per second.
19. A 10eV electron is moving in a circular orbit in a uniform magnetic field of strength 10–4
Weber/m2 calculate the radius of the circular path
(Mass of electron =9.11×10–31 Kg , charge of electron = 1.6×10–19C).

20. An ammeter deflects full-scale with a voltage of 2.5 volts, and has a total resistance of 0.5
ohm. What small resistance must be connected to a measure 20A full-scale?
21. A 250 volt voltmeter has a total resistance of 20,000. What additional series resistance
must be connected to it increase its range to 400 volts.
22. A moving coil galvanometer has a resistance of 50ohms and it given a full scale deflection
for P.D. of 100mv. If the galvanometer is to be converted into voltmeter reading up to 50
volts, what should be the resistance of series resistor?

23. Find the speed at which the mass of a particle will be doubled (C = 3×108 m/s).
24. A 50m trailer is moving with relativistic speed. It passed over a bridge of length 40m. To an
observer at rest with respect to the bridge at one instant the trailer seems to overlap the
bridge i.e. the ends of the trailer seem to coincide with the ends of the bridge; find the speed
to the trailer.
25. A  particle (rest mass = 9.11×10–31 kg)_ has a speed of 107 m/s Compute its Relativistic
Mass and Hence its Energy an “eV”.
27. An electron exists within a region of 10–mm. find its momentum uncertainty
and approximate kinetic energy (h=1.05×10–34 j–sec, m = 9.1×10–31 kg)
28. In an electron gun of a television set an electron is accelerated by the potential
Difference of 10000V . Find its Debroglie’s wavelength.

26. In a hydrogen atom an electron experiences transition from a state whose binding energy is
0.54eV to the state whose excitation energy is 10.2eV Determine quantum numbers of these
states and the wavelength of emitted radiation. (RH=1.097 ×107 m–1)
27. A photon of 12.1 eV absorbed by a hydrogen atom originally in the ground state raises the
atom to an excited state. What is the quantum number of this state?
(E1 = 13.6eV)
28. A blood corpuscle has a diameter 9×10–6 m. in which excited orbit should a hydrogen atom
be such that it is just as big as blood corpuscle?(radius of the 1st orbit = 0.53OA =
0.53×10–10m)
