3
What Is It
Dance in recognizable forms can be in the movement habits of animals and birds,
hence, we can safely say that dance commences with life itself and its history is an
old living matter.

Dance is a series of movements that match the speed and rhythm of a piece of
music. Dance differs from athletics or other daily activities because it focuses primarily
on “aesthetic or even entertaining experiences” (Myers, 2005). It provides a variety of
functions throughout history due to its multidimensionality, although there have been
immense comparative differences in period and culture, people dance mainly for four
reasons:
a. to please the gods;
b. to please others;
c. to please themselves or self-expression;
d. to build community within an ethnic group or social interaction.

Dance is defined in different ways by different people or authors of the art form.

 Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences

of human movement that has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is
acknowledged as dance within a particular culture. It can be categorized and
described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical
period or place of origin.

 Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within
a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing
energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself.

The treatment of dance as a social practice and a form of expressive culture goes
beyond descriptions of local customs, ceremonies, and movement idioms. Like the
Cariňosa which is a courtship dance that portrays the modesty and conservative traits
of Filipino women

4
Dance plays a number of important social roles in all cultures. This is notable in
matters of Emotional Expression and Artistic Expression.

Dance as an Emotional Expression

Dance has been present in human culture and
history for centuries. In its origins, it was meant to be used
as a way of communication for ceremonial rites and
celebrations, mostly. Nowadays, dance is not only
available in theaters and shows, but it can also be found
in media, schools, and even in a flash mob at the mall.
Dance is not limited to people who want to become
professionals; anyone can learn to dance any of the
many rhythms, variations, and at any moment of our lives.

Dance as an Artistic Expression

This refers to a unified representation

of the inner spirit and external action,
accomplished through two aspects of facial
expressions and body language performance.
The audience can enjoy the visual
interpretation of the style of music performers
and emotions, such as joy, passion, sexy,
romantic and form. The artistic expression of
dance is the ability of the dancer to
considering be their own internal emotional experience in the rules within the scope of
the allowed body movements, facial expressions, special skills, etc. A dancer will also
have good artistic expression if his/her action will fuse dance and music harmony into
one's own feelings and understanding of dance and the most incisive display to the
audience, so as to obtain the applause, eventually get good dance performance.
