Ustad Ahmad Lahauri (1580, Badakhshan Khanate - 1649, India, Mughal Empire) was an architect of Tajik
origin, one of the main creators of the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal is located in the city of Agra near the capital New Delhi. The idea of the construction belongs
to Shah Jahan, who wanted to honor the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died after the birth of their
fourteenth child.
All over the world, this building is considered a symbol of love. But love is far from the only motive
underlying the project. The Shah was a representative of Islam, who owned Hindu lands, and with the help of
architecture he sought to demonstrate his greatness and the greatness of his faith. Therefore, the Taj Mahal
has little in common with the traditional temple architecture of India.
The Taj Mahal is an entire architectural complex that stretches on both sides of the Yamuna River. Millions
of tourists start their journey from the bazaar, then pass through the outer courtyard and find themselves in
front of a large gate built of red sandstone interspersed with white marble. Next is the garden, in the middle
of which there is a swimming pool with hundreds of fountains. It leads to the main attraction of the complex
- the Mausoleum, completely lined with white marble. Two absolutely identical red sandstone buildings were
built on both sides of the mausoleum. And behind it, on the other bank of the Yamuna River, there is another
garden called "Moonlight".
The total height of the Taj Mahal is 72 meters. The palace is a five-domed structure with 4 minarets at the
corners with a height of 42 meters. Inside the mausoleum there are two tombs of the shah and his wife.
The mosque is located on a red sandstone platform with an area of 9 thousand square meters and is lined
only with white marble. The strength of the foundation is due to the fact that the level of the site was raised
50 meters above the level of the bank of the Jamna River.
The marble dome adorning the tomb is the most charming part of the Taj Mahal. Its height is 35 meters.
Because of its special shape, it is often called the onion dome. They are completed with gilded figures in the
traditional Persian style.
The minarets demonstrate perfect symmetry. This is a traditional element of mosques, calling a Muslim
believer to prayer.
The construction of the Taj Mahal lasted 22 years and employed about 22,000 people.
The Mughal style is marked by a rapid revival of Islamic architecture in Northern India, where Persian,
Indian and various local styles mixed, resulting in buildings of incredible sophistication. The buildings used
white marble and red sandstone. Architects relied more on pillars and beams. Under Padishah Shah Jahan I,
when the Mughal style reached its peak, double domes taken from the rectangular pediment of the arch
surrounded by plantings were used. Particular attention was paid to the symmetry and balance between the
parts of the building and the fine details of the decor.
In 1983, the Taj Mahal was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List: "the pearl of Muslim art in India
and one of the universally recognized masterpieces of World Heritage." And in 2007, he took an honorable
place among the New Wonders of the World.
