Assignment 1

Instructions:
 Answer all the questions.
 All notations have usual meaning as in the text book.
 Submission Date : 09-01-2022 (Sunday) before 10PM. Details for submission will be informed
later.

1. Let 𝐫(t) = 𝑎 cos 𝑡 𝐢 + a sin 𝑡 𝐣 + f(t)𝐤 be a plane curve. Prove that f(t) satisfies the equation
𝑓 ||| (𝑡) + 𝑓 | (𝑡) = 0, where 𝑓 | (𝑡), 𝑓 ||| (𝑡) denote the first and third derivatives of f
respectively.

2. If the tangent and binormal at a point of a curve make angles 𝜃 and ∅ respectively with a
fixed direction, then prove that
𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝜃 𝑑𝜃 𝑘
=− ,
𝑠𝑖𝑛∅ 𝑑∅ 𝜏

where 𝑘 is the curvature and 𝜏 is the torsion of the curve.

𝑧
3. For the curve of intersection of the surfaces 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 𝑐 2 , 𝑦 = 𝑥𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ , prove that 𝑘 =
𝑐
𝑐
𝜏 = 2𝑥 2 where 𝑘 is the curvature and 𝜏 is the torsion and c, x are non-zero.

4. Show that the ellipse 𝑥 = 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝑡, 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑡, 𝑎 > 𝑏 > 0, has its largest curvature on its
major axis and its smallest curvature on its minor axis.

𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑥 4)+𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑦 4)
5. (a) Find lim if it exists
(𝑥,𝑦)→(0,0) √𝑥 4+𝑦 4
(b) Determine the largest set on which function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) is continuous
𝑥 2𝑦3
, 𝑖𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) ≠ (0,0)
𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = {2𝑥 2+𝑦2
1, 𝑖𝑓 (𝑥, 𝑦) = (0,0)

6. (a) Find the area of the region that lies inside the circle 𝑟 = 10 and beyond the line
𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝜃 = 6.
(b) Sketch the curve r2 = - cos θ. Explain clearly how you have sketched the graph.

7. Find the area of the surface generated by revolving the part of the curve r2 = cos 2θ that lies
in the third and fourth quadrant about x-axis.

8. Find values of the constants 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐 such that the directional derivative of 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) =
𝑎𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑏𝑦𝑧 + 𝑐𝑧 2 𝑥 3 at the point (1,2, −1) has a maximum value of 64 in a direction
parallel to the z-axis.
9. Find T, N, B for the curve r(t) = sin 𝑡 𝒊 − 𝑡𝒋 + cos 𝑡 𝒌 at t = π/4. Then find the equations of
the osculating, normal, and rectifying planes for the curve at that point.

10. Find the directional derivative of 𝑧 = 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) at the point (𝑥0 , 𝑦0 ) in the direction which
makes an angle 𝜃 with the x-axis in the anticlockwise direction and assume that 𝑓𝑥 𝑎nd 𝑓𝑦
Exists. Hence, find
(a) The directional derivative of 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 2 − 6𝑦 2 at the point 𝑝(7,2) in the direction
𝜃 = 450
(b) The maximum directional derivative for the given surface and the point in (a)
