Some of the key events and characters introduced are Gandalf, the dwarves including Thorin, and Bilbo signing the contract. Tolkien provides background on the quest to reclaim the dwarven treasure from Smaug.

Tolkien seems to view physical strength and bravery positively at this point, as Bilbo and the dwarves face dangers from trolls and goblins. Intelligence is also valued, as shown by Elrond. Good looks and grooming are associated with elves, while ugliness with goblins.

Elrond notices there are moon letters on the map that reveal the secret door into the Lonely Mountain, which Thorin had not noticed in all the years he owned the map. This suggests Thorin is not as observant as Elrond.

Chapter 2

Esteemed Held in great respect or admired / Metin

paraphernalia    The equipment needed for a particular activity / Áhöld

applicable Appropriet / Viðeigandi

Answer the following questions from the chapter:

1. What are the terms of Bilbo's contract? Do you think they are fair terms? The terms are
cash on delivery up to and not exceeding one fourteenth of total profits, All traveling
expenses guaranteed in any event and funeral expenses to be defrayed by us or our
representatives. I don’t think these are fair terms because I think they are ripping him
off because he nearly gets not money from doing this job.

2. How does Bilbo know that the three people are trolls? Can you think of any other stories
(especially children's stories and fairy tales) you know about trolls? How are Tolkien's trolls
similar to trolls in other stories? How are they different? Bilbo can see they are trolls from
their heavy faces, their size, the shape of their legs and from the language that the
trolls spoke in. I cant think of any stories that I have read that have trolls in them.

3. Myths, legends, and folklore often reflect the values of a given culture. At this point in the
story, what can you infer about the character traits that Tolkien considers positive? What
character traits are viewed in a negative light? What is more important at this point; intellig

ence or physical strength? I think that Tolkien considers good looks to be positive
because in the book the goblins are explained too be ugly beings and because of that
they are considered to be ugly but the elves who are well groomed and are much
better looking then the goblins are the good guys. I think that at this point good
physical strength is more important in the story then intelligence because right now
the dwarves and Bilbo are doing a lot of fighting and I think Bilbo would be looked
more highly at if he could fight off those goblins or trolls.
