ELECTIVES

NEED OF MORE LIVELY STREETS

SITE: NEAR MEHER SIGNAL,

ELECTIVES
Preface

• Streets occupy approximately 20 percent of the total

land area in a typical city, and they are the most
important and ubiquitous form of public space.
• But recently, streets have been reduced to a more
restricted role of serving as conduits for the movement
of automobiles.
• The situation is getting worse every day as the number
of private vehicles grows exponentially.
• As a number of cities around the world have realized,
this has undermined quality of life and the character of
public spaces. There is an urgent need to look at streets
as places where people walk, talk, cycle, shop, and
perform the multitude of social functions that are
critical to the health of cities.
• Streets in our cities should be representative of our
lifestyle and culture. Their designs need to respond to
the multitude of activities and functions that streets
perform.
SITE ANALYSIS

1. Due to unhindered access to the cycle path from the

vehicular path, there is on-street parking on the cycle-path,
thus it’s useless, and under-utilized.
2. The existing Meher intersection is large, and thus takes a
long time to get across the junction. This encourages people
to break rules, and take turn from the wrong side.
3. The cycle path needs to be separated off properly from
the vehicular path, for the safety of the cyclists. Proper
signage needs to be added across the site, for proper
communication of various attributes of street design.
4. There is haphazard parking on the footpath, thus making
it useless for pedestrians, who then walk on the vehicular
path, which is extremely unsafe.

Problems on street

3. Parking on road 4. Segregation of people

from road to street
1.Segregation between 2. Cheerless streets
street and road
Streets need to be designed for all users, not
just for motor vehicles.

Street design elements:

1. Footpaths.
2. smoother motor vehicle movement.
3. The carriageway.
4. Cycle tracks.
5. Service lanes.
6. Bus lanes.
7. Landscaping.
8. Utilities.
If a street does not provide
separate space for
throughput. pedestrians,
people will walk in the
carriageway.

A street with adequate

space for walking and other
activities is safer for
pedestrians and allows for
smoother motor vehicle
movement.

All streets that aim to maximize mobility also need

separate slow zones. The slow space is for livability—
for people to walk, talk, and interact, for doing
business, for children to play. The provision of an
adequate slow zone makes it possible for the mobility
zone of a street to provide for safe, relatively
uninterrupted mobility at moderate speeds.
The result is a safer and more pleasant street
environment for everyone.
What makes up a complete street?

• Streets need to be designed for all

users, depending on factors such as
the available right-of-way, traffic,
street-side activities, and adjacent
space uses.
• In general, smaller rights-of-way can
function as slow shared spaces used
by both pedestrians and vehicles.
• Street vending and social activities
can also take place in the shared
space.
• The cycle track, though part of the
mobility zone, is also segregated from
motor vehicle traffic
SOME MORE SOLUTIONS

1. Two -Wheeler Parking: By planning and

providing for parking on the street will
reduce nuisance on footpath
2. Street Lighting: Street light are inherent to
safety at night time Solar lights, at that are
also sustainable.
3. Landscape: Apart from aesthetic purposes
they provide shade and reduce ambient
temperature
4. Cycle Path: Marking the cycle path
permanently, and creating barrier
between the vehicular and cycle
movement will ensure no parking on the
path.
5. Street Furniture: Provide various services
and functions, thus making it easy for
movement.
6. Art: Renders character to place, and
makes more lively and energetic
7. Compact Junction: Compacting the
junction ensures that fast movement of
cars in less time, and tighter pedestrian
movement.
8. Signage: Help create order and provide
essential Information to drivers
9. Creating Social Space: Creating and
Placing prominent social space not only
acts to the character of the street but also
can be flexibly used for various purposes.
