1. INTRODUCTION
The following information gives the functional design requirements of the Liquid Knock
Out Vessels.
The liquid knock out drum is designed to remove entrained liquid droplets prior to the
gas being routed to the flare or disposal system.
KO Vessels within 1440 psi/working pressure, will be used downstream of separators.
KO Vessels within 250 psi/working pressure, will be used downstream of surge tanks.
The vessels will also provide liquid retention in the event of a full flow relief scenario or
carryover when installed within a safety relief line system.
NOTE: This Functional Specification has been developed in line with ISO13879
“Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries – Content and Drafting of a Functional
Specification”. It may be used by the supplier for quotation and outline design
purposes. The supplier is required to produce a Technical Specification to meet the
requirements of this Functional Specification, all in accordance with ISO13880
“Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries – Content and Drafting of a Technical
Specification”. Once the Technical Specification has been approved by Expro Group
Engineering, it, and not this Functional Specification, will be used as the contractual
design specification.

3. QUALITY ASSURANCE
The Liquid Knock Out Vessels and any ancillary components shall be delivered
complete in accordance with the Expro Quality Assurance Requirements, document
number GQD1001 (latest revision).
Vendors will be audited on Quality Procedures and technical capability prior to award of
work. Vendors shall be required to maintain and document material traceability at the
component level.

6. MANUFACTURING PHILOSOPHY
6.1.1 GENERAL
The selection of material depends on the temperature range and compatibility with liquids
and gases contained within the tank
All materials are to be selected in accordance with the appropriate vessel / piping code and
in accordance with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) Testing
is not applicable. Pressure retaining material shall be supplied with material certificates in
accordance with EN10204 type 3.1 or 3.2 as applicable.
7.1 QUALIFICATION
The KO Vessels and ancillary components must be qualified in accordance with the relevant
codes and specifications outlined in section 5.2

The Liquid Knock Out Vessels should be shipped, well supported and secured in suitable
packaging supplied with adequate lifting points, slings and shackles in accordance with DNV
2.7.1.
The unit is required to stand vertically on location, but must be capable of being transported
horizontally.
Lifting and handling of the KO Vessels is to be carried out with the specified lifting
arrangement.
End caps (test caps) to be fitted during shipping.

10. ERGONOMICS
The unit should be designed from the outset for ease of use and accessibility.
The unit shall be designed to minimise manual intervention during the
lifting/shipping/handling phase.
The operators must be able to operate/access all controls and instrumentation without
having to assume unnatural/uncomfortable body positions or exposing themselves to
potentially hazardous situations
Safety and the environment are key concerns to Expro and therefore the unit must be
designed to minimise operator exposure to any hazards.
The unit shall be designed to minimise manual intervention during the
lifting/shipping/handling phase and where manual intervention is required, safe access
be provided.
Changes in working levels should be minimised but where unavoidable, careful thought
shall be given to stair/platform arrangements.
Stencilling shall indicate that the vessel shall only be handled when empty
The unit shall be supplied with pipe caps.
Entries into the vessel large enough for personnel to enter shall be clearly identified as
‘Caution confined space- entry permit required’
