RE: Ms. Kellyrose Castro

To whom it may concern:

I had the privilege of working with Kellyrose Castro as her teacher associate in the spring
of 2021 when she joined the mathematics department at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High
School as a student teacher, completing her second practicum as part of the Education
Program at the University of Lethbridge. Throughout her two-month practicum, she
consistently demonstrated a high level of competence and professionalism, bringing care
and attention to her lesson planning, task design, classroom management and assessment
practices. Kellyrose exudes a passion for learning and growing as a teacher and member
of a collaborative community. It was a privilege to welcome her into our mathematics
department, as she embraced the work of moving our students and team forward
according to our school and district priorities and goals. Kellyrose made significant
positive contributions to the team, her students, and the learning community as a whole.

One of Kellyrose’s most impactful contributions was her work collaborating around our
school’s implementation of a new assessment system in mathematics. Our school is
piloting assessment according to levels of proficiency within a newly developed learning
progression rubric, rather than by using percentage grades. Our goal has been a shift to
assessment for learning, providing students with meaningful feedback to move learning
forward. Kellyrose was an active contributor to this important work. She designed and
implemented numerous tasks aligned with the learning progression rubric for use by the
team. Additionally, she analyzed evidence of learning as feedback for what worked well
and what needed improvement, making necessary adjustments to her task design. She
provided valuable feedback to her colleagues, contributing ideas for ways in which to
improve our team assessment practices. She engaged in meaningful professional
conversations around student evidence of learning, providing insight and perspective to
the process of standard setting as a team.

An active participant in team professional learning, Kellyrose engaged regularly in

generative dialogue with colleagues as part of our team critical reflection protocols. She
was able to make connections between the work we are doing as a mathematics
department and our school and system goals. For example, she was instrumental in
ensuring that her students had a solid understanding of the skills and concepts they
needed to demonstrate in order to achieve each level of proficiency, as this aligned with
our School Development Plan goal around building student mathematical literacy.
Kellyrose demonstrates a commitment to working as part of a team and understands the
importance of shared vision and purpose.

Kellyrose is a dedicated, conscientious, and reflective teacher who contributes positively

to her school community. I have no doubt she will be a valuable asset to her future
students, colleagues, and learning community as a whole.
