BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Electrical / electronic instrument is a measuring device

used for determining the meter value or quantity of measurements

of electrical or electronic units.

Common Electrical and Electronic Instruments

The home electrical circuit is part of our daily amenities enjoyed for our lights in

illuminating our living room (sala), kitchen, dining, bedroom and other parts of the

3
home. The radio and television set use electricity to power on its circuit, washing

machine, microwave oven, computer whether it is a desktop, laptop or tablet, and

cellphones uses electricity to keep our lives comfortable. These home devices are

just some of common electrical and electronic consuming devices and the focus of our

lesson today.

As a student, how will you know that the electricity in your home is 220 or 230

volts? What is the resistance of magnetic core windings in your electric fan, or what is

the current rating of your refrigerator? In these, you must be aware of the electrical or

electronic instruments to measure the consumption or quantity used by these common

electrical or electronic appliances and the measurement values provided by each of

the instruments.

At this point these are the electrical and electronic instruments that will help you

measure the electrical and electronic circuits.

*The Voltage and Voltmeter

Voltage is the electrical pressure or potential difference between two points in

a circuit. The unit of voltage is volt, such as 30 volts, 60 volts, 230 volts, etc.

Voltmeter is a measuring instrument of the electric potential difference between

two points that are connected in parallel to each other. At home or in school the

electric voltage is rated at 220 volts or 230 volts. Most appliances and home devices

use these voltages but some countries uses smaller voltages for their appliances.

Similarly, a battery is rated 1.5 volts, 9 volts, 12 volts, or 24 volts, so the unit of voltage

is volt.

Distribution voltage that are supplied by electricity providers are rated in high

voltage. Industrial machines in factories and commercial establishments for their

4
motors and equipment may be similar or bigger than the 230 volts. It is important that

you are familiar with conversion values on this voltage values.

Voltage conversion values:

1,000 volts = 1 kilovolt (1kV) 1,500 volts = 1.5 kV

1,000,000 volts = 1 Megavolt (1MV) 1,500,000 volts = 1.5 MV

The Voltage may be Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (AC).

Alternating current voltage in an electric circuit flow reverses periodically the electric

charge and changes its direction and magnitude. This is common in our regular

electricity at home and school electrical circuits. Direct current voltage is the

movement of electric charge in one direction or unidirectional, such as battery, semi-

conductors and other electronic circuits and devices.

Home and school electrical outlets are supplied with alternating current across

the lines. Refrigerators, aircons, televisions, computers and others use AC circuits in

performing its working conditions.

5
*The Current and Ammeter

Current is the flow of electrons or ions moving through the electrical conductor

in the circuit. The unit of current is ampere, such as 1 ampere, 5 amperes,

30 amperes, etc.

Ammeter is the measuring instrument used to measure the current in a circuit.

The electric currents are measured in Amperes and when it is used, the Ammeter is

connected in series with the circuit which the current is being measured. Current

readings may be 1 ampere (A), 2 A, 5 A, 15 A and in some cases less than 1 ampere

which will be rated as milli Ampere (mA). 1,000 mA (milli Ampere) is 1 A (ampere),

likewise 1 A = 1,000 mA. Let’s take a look on the following ampere values:

0.100 A = 100 mA 0.350 A = 350 mA 0.028 A = 28 mA

650 mA = 0.650 A 380 mA = 0.380 A 450 mA = 0.450 A

Ammeter reading may be a direct current ampere (DCA) or alternating current

ampere (ACA).

Clamp meter is a current probe with jaws and clamped around electric

conductors. It is useful also for determining the current used by refrigerators and air

conditioning unit current ratings that matches with its manufactured requirement.

*The Resistance and Ohmmeter

Resistance is the opposition to the current flow of electrical circuit. The

resistance unit is ohms, it is symbolized by the Greek letter omega ().

Ohmmeter is an electrical instrument which measures the resistance of the

electric circuits. The unit of resistance is Ohm (), when the circuit or devices measure

is of low resistance, the Micro-Ohmmeter is used, likewise for large values of

resistance the instrument used is MegOhmmeter.

When the reading is more than a thousand ohms (), it will be read as kilo ohm

(k). Example: 2,300 ohms is simplified as 2.3 kilo ohms (2.3 k), for a rating of

45,000 ohms, the reading is 45 kilo ohms (45 k). Let’s take a look at the following

resistance values and their conversions:

1,500 ohms = 1.5 k 2,800 ohms = 2.8 k 5,900 ohms = 5.9 k

2.6 k = 2,600  3.8 k = 3,800  4.7 k = 4,700 

*The Power and Wattmeter

Power in electricity is the rate per unit time of electrical energy consumed by

electrical appliances or devices. The unit of power is watts.

Wattmeter is an instrument used for measuring the electric power of the circuit.

Home and school power consumption is measured in watts, a fluorescent lamp that is

40 watts is the amount of consumption of that lighting unit in one (1) hour. Our

electrical consuming devices such as computers, television, radio, washing machines,

electric stoves/ovens, electric fans have their own rating consumption per hour.

When the reading is more than a thousand watts (W), it will be read a kilowatts

(kW). Example: 1,200 watts is equal to 1.2 kilowatts (1.2 kW), similarly an electric

stove which is rated 1,000 watts is simplified as 1 kW consumption. Let’s study these

power consumptions and their conversion values:

16 kW = 16,000 watts 2.9 kW = 2,900 watts 4.4 kW = 4,400 watts

6,500 watts = 6.5 kW 3,300 watts = 3.3 kW 1,800 watts = 1.8 kW

*The Multitester

Multitester (also called multimeter) is an electrical measuring instrument that

measures the current, voltage and resistance respectively. It performs as an ammeter

in measuring the current flow of the circuit; a voltmeter in measuring the voltage of the

circuit; and an ohmmeter that measure the resistance of the circuit. All of these

functions are available in this specific device respectively. By setting the Range

Selector Knob of the multitester, the function selected will be the basis in reading the

Scale of the tester. Recent updates on electrical and electronic instruments, the

multitester is the most useable measuring device for electrical or electronic activities

and tasks. It is important that you are familiar with the parts of the multitester: pointer,

scale, zero position adjuster, range selector knob, test pins, test probes and zero ohm

adjuster knob.

There are two forms of Multitester, the 1) analog type multitester and 2) digital

type multitester. Both of these type of multitester is useful, only they differ on how the

measurement is read on its display screen.

Analog multitester is showing the continuous deflection of needle pointer on its

window screen or scale and point that needle to the specified reading of the

instrument.

Digital multitester is displaying visual numerical reading on its display panel.

After setting the Range Selector Knob of the tester, the numerical reading in DC

voltage, AC voltage, current in ampere, and resistance in ohms will be displayed on

its screen.
