BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The home electrical circuit is part of our daily amenities enjoyed for our lights in
illuminating our living room (sala), kitchen, dining, bedroom and other parts of the
3
home. The radio and television set use electricity to power on its circuit, washing
cellphones uses electricity to keep our lives comfortable. These home devices are
just some of common electrical and electronic consuming devices and the focus of our
lesson today.
As a student, how will you know that the electricity in your home is 220 or 230
volts? What is the resistance of magnetic core windings in your electric fan, or what is
the current rating of your refrigerator? In these, you must be aware of the electrical or
the instruments.
At this point these are the electrical and electronic instruments that will help you
a circuit. The unit of voltage is volt, such as 30 volts, 60 volts, 230 volts, etc.
two points that are connected in parallel to each other. At home or in school the
electric voltage is rated at 220 volts or 230 volts. Most appliances and home devices
use these voltages but some countries uses smaller voltages for their appliances.
Similarly, a battery is rated 1.5 volts, 9 volts, 12 volts, or 24 volts, so the unit of voltage
is volt.
Distribution voltage that are supplied by electricity providers are rated in high

motors and equipment may be similar or bigger than the 230 volts. It is important that
Alternating current voltage in an electric circuit flow reverses periodically the electric
charge and changes its direction and magnitude. This is common in our regular
electricity at home and school electrical circuits. Direct current voltage is the
Home and school electrical outlets are supplied with alternating current across
the lines. Refrigerators, aircons, televisions, computers and others use AC circuits in

*The Current and Ammeter
Current is the flow of electrons or ions moving through the electrical conductor
30 amperes, etc.
The electric currents are measured in Amperes and when it is used, the Ammeter is
connected in series with the circuit which the current is being measured. Current
readings may be 1 ampere (A), 2 A, 5 A, 15 A and in some cases less than 1 ampere
which will be rated as milli Ampere (mA). 1,000 mA (milli Ampere) is 1 A (ampere),
likewise 1 A = 1,000 mA. Let’s take a look on the following ampere values:
ampere (ACA).

Clamp meter is a current probe with jaws and clamped around electric
conductors. It is useful also for determining the current used by refrigerators and air
conditioning unit current ratings that matches with its manufactured requirement.

When the reading is more than a thousand ohms (), it will be read as kilo ohm
(k). Example: 2,300 ohms is simplified as 2.3 kilo ohms (2.3 k), for a rating of
45,000 ohms, the reading is 45 kilo ohms (45 k). Let’s take a look at the following

Wattmeter is an instrument used for measuring the electric power of the circuit.
Home and school power consumption is measured in watts, a fluorescent lamp that is
40 watts is the amount of consumption of that lighting unit in one (1) hour. Our
electric stoves/ovens, electric fans have their own rating consumption per hour.
When the reading is more than a thousand watts (W), it will be read a kilowatts
(kW). Example: 1,200 watts is equal to 1.2 kilowatts (1.2 kW), similarly an electric
stove which is rated 1,000 watts is simplified as 1 kW consumption. Let’s study these

in measuring the current flow of the circuit; a voltmeter in measuring the voltage of the
circuit; and an ohmmeter that measure the resistance of the circuit. All of these
functions are available in this specific device respectively. By setting the Range

Scale of the tester. Recent updates on electrical and electronic instruments, the
multitester is the most useable measuring device for electrical or electronic activities
and tasks. It is important that you are familiar with the parts of the multitester: pointer,
scale, zero position adjuster, range selector knob, test pins, test probes and zero ohm
adjuster knob.

There are two forms of Multitester, the 1) analog type multitester and 2) digital
type multitester. Both of these type of multitester is useful, only they differ on how the

instrument.
