The key takeaways are about simplifying expressions with rational exponents and understanding rational exponents.

Rational exponents are exponents that have a fractional component, such as 1/2 or 3/4. They can be written as radicals or using fractional exponent notation.

To simplify expressions with rational exponents, you can use properties of exponents similarly to how you use them with integer exponents. You can also combine like terms with the same rational exponent.

WRITING EXPRESSIONS WITH RATIONAL EXPONENTS AS RADICALS AND VICE VERSA
Learning Competency:

 Writes expressions with rational exponents as radicals and vice versa.

Hi! I’m Wonder Woman. With this material, I can help you to
define and write expressions with rational exponents as
radicals and vice versa.

Are you ready?

Let’s start!...
A rational exponent represents both an integer exponent
and an nth root. The root is found in the denominator (like
a tree, the root is at the bottom), and the integer
exponent is found in the numerator. See the illustration.
below.

distribute the exponent. 811/4 3
Until this point we have only had
exponents that are integers (positive
or negative whole numbers), so it is
time to introduce two new rules that
deal with rational (or fractional)
exponents. These rules will help to
simplify radicals with different indices
by rewriting the problem with
rational exponents.

1 1 1
The Definition of𝑎𝑛 ∶ 𝑎𝑛 = √𝑎 , this says 73 = √7
𝑛 3

that if the exponent is a fraction, then

the problem can be rewritten using 𝑥 2 = √𝑥

radicals. Notice that the denominator of

the fraction becomes the index of the
1
235 = √23
5

radical.

𝑚 𝑚 2
3
The Definition of 𝑎 𝑛 ∶ 𝑎 𝑛 = √𝑎𝑚 : , this 𝑥 3 = √𝑥 2
𝑛

says that if the exponent is a fraction,

3
then the problem can be rewritten using 54 = √53
4

radicals. Notice that the denominator of

the fraction becomes the index of the
7
𝑦2 = 2
𝑦7
radical and the numerator becomes the
power inside the radical.
Example 1 – Rewrite using radicals.

Here are the new rules along with an example or

two of how to apply each rule:

Step 1: Apply the definition of . 134 = 4√13

Example 2 – Rewrite using rational exponents.

Step 1: Apply the definition of . √37 = 372

Example 3 – Rewrite using radicals.
