in your report.
4. The answers to any of these questions cannot be based on any of the group submissions made for the
course.
5. You are not supposed to discuss these questions or the answers for them with any of your colleagues or
others. You need to adhere to the highest standards of integrity that is expected from you. 6. I can,
selectively, question any of you on your submission to ascertain originality of the submission as part of
evaluation.
7. There will be ZERO TOLERANCE for academic dishonesty. Any instance of academic dishonesty will
be penalized severely as per the provisions of the PGP Student Manual. It is your responsibility to know
what constitutes plagiarism. The simple rule is when in doubt, reference!
8. Submission will be through Google Classroom. If your submission is hand-written (please write
legibly), scan and upload. Name the file as: <RollNumber>>. Submit only in Word format. Deadline:
17:00 hours, Sunday, October 10, 2021. Please plan ahead based on your other responsibilities. Late
submission will not be entertained. No extension of deadline will be provided. Since sufficient notice is
provided, it is your responsibility to upload the submission within the deadline.

QUESTIONS
1. Identify ONE problem/design challenge from the list that is provided in Appendix-1. a) Identify your
design challenge: SELECT ONLY ONE FROM APPENDIX-1. b) Identify the list of users that you
would learn from to understand about your design challenge. Very briefly give the reason for
including them for your study. (2.5 marks)
c) Identify the list of experts that you would learn from to understand about your design challenge.
List their field of expertise and explain why you have chosen to include them as part of your
study. (2.5 marks)
d) Identify the list of in-context immersion locations where you need to observe and learn about your
design challenge. (2.5 marks)
e) Identify the list of analogous immersion locations where you need to observe and learn about your
design challenge. (2.5 marks)

2. Identify a company. Analyze it using the 3-Horizon framework. Identify it’s H1, H2, and H3 businesses
(note that a company may not have businesses across all horizons). Explain briefly why you classify the
businesses as H1, H2, and H3. What are your recommendations, if any, to the company based on your
analysis? (4 marks)

3. Professors Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne say that companies can look across six paths to identify
opportunities to create new markets. Give examples of companies which leveraged any two paths to create
new markets. Each path can be explained by a different example or the same example. The examples
chosen should not have been discussed in the class or assigned reading or something that is discussed as
an example of this path on the internet. Explain clearly how they leveraged the path(s). (6 marks)

4. On 22, January 2021, Grasim Industries (Grasim) announced its foray into the paints business with an
initial capital expenditure of Rs. 5000 crores over three years.
Evaluate this strategic decision of Grasim using the Core Adjacency and Core Competence framework
discussed in the course. Would you recommend Grasim to go ahead with its decision? If No, make a
strong case for your recommendation. If Yes, what would be your recommendations on how Grasim
should proceed? What factors should it bear in mind while going ahead? (10 marks)
Tip: You can refer to company annual report to know more about the company. The newspaper reports of
the decision will give you further background. There could be some analysis of the move in the media as
well. You can refer to them as long as you appropriately give credit by proper referencing in footnotes.
Your primary analysis should be through the concepts learnt in the Core Adjacency and Core Competence
modules in this course. If you want to know about the paint industry quickly, you can refer to the Draft
Red Herring Prospectus of Indigo Paints that was listed recently (Pages 127-153). You can access the
prospectus online through simple Google Search. You can also refer to the Asian Paints case study that
was part of the first-year course. Provide all references as footnotes at appropriate places.

5. In recent months, Tata Digital (a 100% subsidiary of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group)
picked up majority stakes in Big Basket (online grocery), 1mg (e-pharma) and Curefit (fitness). Tata
Digital was also reported to be in talks to pick a majority stake in Dunzo (hyperlocal concierge service).
Critically evaluate these strategic moves of Tata Digital/Tata Group. Do you agree with these moves? Do
you agree with the decision to choose the acquisition path? Do you agree with the choice of target
companies? Explain, Why? Why not? clearly. Based on your analysis, what would be your
recommendations to Tata Digital/Tata Group. (10 marks)

am looking for your own analysis of these strategic choices. Provide all references as f ootnotes at
