SCHOOL: Robert Smith School


1. School Procedures Going to/From School
 Parents and caregivers are responsible for ensuring that self-screening measures occur prior to
the child arriving at school. https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/
 Students should wash their hands with soap and water prior to leaving home. Students will
sanitize their hands before leaving the school and should wash their hands when they return
home.
 Non-medical masks are mandated on the bus for all EA’s, bus drivers and students in Grades 4-6.
 Staff are required to use the same screening tool as indicated above prior to entering the building.
 Students walking to and from school should be reminded to maintain the required physical
distance to and from school.
 Parents/guardians dropping off and/or picking up students are asked to remain in their vehicles or
wait outside the school, maintaining the required physical distance from others.
 Students are asked to leave all toys or other nonessential items at home.
 Please reference our information letter regarding our new bus loop and drop off locations for a
more detailed outline of bussing and drop off/pick up procedures.
 Playground supervision will begin at 8:30 am. In the morning, the playground is shared by Robert
Smith and Ecole Bonaventure. To limit the number of students on the playground, students who
are walking or being dropped off are asked to arrive at school as close to the 8:50 am bell as
possible. From 8:30 – 8:50 am, the North side of the playground will be designated for Robert
Smith Students and the South side of the playground will be designated for Ecole Bonaventure
Students.

School Entry/Exit
 Students will be divided into four cohorts for the school day; Kindergarten cohort, grade 1/2
cohort, grade 3/4 cohort and grade 5/6 cohort. Cohorts will not exceed 75 people.
 Cohorts will access the school via an assigned, separate entrance. Kindergartens will enter
through the back door. Grade 1/2 will enter through the North West door. Grades 3/4 and 5/6 will
stagger their entrances through the North East door.
 Classes entering and exiting the building will stagger their entry/exit to ensure social distancing
measures are adhered to.
 Staff will enter and exit maintaining a 2 metre distance through the main entrance or parking lot
side door, sanitizing hands upon arriving at and before departing school.
 Staff will be on hand to supervise the entry and exit of students.

Masks and PPE at School


 All staff and students in Grades 4-6 are mandated to wear masks when physical distancing is not
possible and may not attend without one. It is highly recommended that Grade 3 students wear
masks as they are in a Grade 3/4 classroom. Students in K-Grade 2 are encouraged to wear masks
but are not required to.
 Non-medical masks will be provided for any staff and students who do not arrive at school with
their own.
 Masks should not be worn by anyone who is unable to remove the mask without assistance
and/or has breathing difficulties.

Hand Washing/Sanitizing, Personal Hygiene


 Students and staff will be required to wash and/or sanitize their hands frequently.
Handwashing/sanitizing should occur:
- at the start of the day and before going home
- after going to the washroom
- before preparing food
- before and after eating
- after getting hands dirty
- after wiping noses or handling dirty tissues
- after coughing, sneezing or blowing nose
- after cleaning tasks (staff)
 A hand sanitizing station will be set up at the main entrance.
 Students will sanitize their hands as they enter their classroom.
 Students will be reminded to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a
flexed elbow or tissue.
 Students will be reminded to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.

Enhanced Cleaning
 Our school building will be sanitized and cleaned frequently throughout the day. High touch
surfaces (eg. Doorknobs, light switches, electronic devices, desks, chairs) will be disinfected at
least twice a day.
 Washrooms will be cleaned and disinfected frequently and their use staggered.
 The use of common spaces will be limited.
 Where possible doors will be left open and light switches on to avoid repeated touching.

Breakfast Program and other Nutritional Breaks, Recesses and Playground


 Formal breakfast program will be suspended at this time. Instead, breakfast will be offered in
classrooms from 8:50 am to 9:05 am. Breakfast will be individually packaged and will not be
shared between students.
 Students are asked to bring their own lunches to school. If a lunch is provided to a student by the
school, it will be individually packaged. Students are not to share food.
 Students will eat in their classrooms for lunch. If a student goes home for lunch, their hands
should be washed with soap and water when arriving at home, when leaving home, and upon
school re-entry.
 Water fountains will not be available for use. Water bottle filling stations will remain operational.
Students are asked to bring their own personal water bottle to refill.
 Milk program will be suspended.
 Hot lunch days will be suspended.
 During first recess and lunch recess, the school playground will be divided into 4 sections to
accommodate cohorts. All students will be required to remain in their cohorts while playing on
the playground. Zones will be marked to maintain physical distancing between cohorts. Please see
appendix A.
 Cohorts will have separate equipment bins for playground use that will be cleaned and sanitized
regularly.
 Contact sports and games will not be permitted.
 Non-medical masks may be removed during outdoor play.
 Public health has indicated that playgrounds and play structures are low risk for transmission.

School Spaces
 Physical distancing within classrooms will be required to the greatest extent possible.
 Students will work in classrooms with spaces between tables and desks a minimum of 1 metre
apart.
 Students will use their own supplies and not share supplies.
 Outdoor classes and learning opportunities will be encouraged.
 The movement of people within a school will be minimized and it is critical to maintain physical
distancing as much as possible. Whenever possible, staff will change rooms and students will
remain in their cohort in the assigned area.
 Student Services clinicians will have a designated workspace.
 Washroom use will be staggered throughout the day to avoid congestion.

Ventilation
 AC filters will be changed regularly.
 HVAC system settings will be set to optimize fresh air exchange.
 Windows will be open when possible.
 Doors will be open when possible.

Drills
 Fire and lock-down drills will be modified to achieve required physical distancing.

Parents, Volunteers and Visitors to School


 Parents, visitors and volunteers will be limited to the greatest extent possible. Parents are asked
to communicate with the school by phone or email whenever possible.
 Parents/Guardians are asked to wait for their children either in their vehicle or physically
distanced outside the school.
 When entering the school, parents, visitors and volunteers will be required to self-screen, wear a
mask and adhere to physical distancing and hygiene practices. Visitors must sign in with the office.

Community Use of Facilities


 The community use of school facilities is suspended at this time.

2. Learning Mental Health and Well-being


 Mental health and well-being are a priority of Lord Selkirk School Division. Teachers will continue
to focus on supporting the mental health of students by teaching social and emotional
competency and building resilience, while embedding it into their practice and daily routines.
 Robert Smith School will continue to work with Project 11 to support mental health and well-
being.
 Our school Guidance Counselor will work with individuals to support students having difficulty
making the transition back to in-class learning.

Recovery Learning
 Our focus will continue to remain on the development of literacy and numeracy learning. This will
occur through the wide range of teaching and assessment practices implemented by our teachers.
 Students will be given time to adjust to new school routines. Students will receive direct
instruction of proper hand hygiene, and appropriate mask use. This will include the use of social
stories to accommodate all learners.
 The LSSD recognizes that the planning and preparation for each student’s learning needs requires
a collaborative team approach.
 Monthly Student Services meetings will be scheduled with school assigned clinicians (Social Work,
School Psychology, and Speech Language Pathologist), as they are essential and necessary for
emergency response planning. School teams will meet to discuss student needs and develop any
necessary intervention plans for students who struggled with remote learning.
 Student Specific Plans will be updated regularly by the school team.
 Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions regarding your child’s progress or
programming.

Outdoor Learning
 Kindergarten teachers will continue to take students out for Forest Fridays maintaining physical
distance requirements.
 Staff will plan lessons that can be taught outside whenever possible including nature walks,
learning through landscapes, environmental education, and greenspace learning.

Physical Education, Performing Arts, Library and School Events


 Students will not change for Physical Education and are asked to wear comfortable clothing and
appropriate footwear.
 Physical Education classes will continue, however contact sports and activities where physical
distancing cannot be maintained will not be permitted.
 Library will continue to be utilized to lend books. All books returned to the library will sit for 72
hours prior to being re-shelved.
 Music will be modified to incorporate pieces of the curriculum that do not involve singing or
instruments at this time.
 Field trips, large events, and assemblies will not be scheduled unless public health requirements
can be met
 Any extra-curricular activity will follow current public health guidelines.

3. School Staff Staff Learning


 Teachers will receive regular professional development in response to Manitoba Health and
Manitoba Education directives.
 Professional learning to support and guide teachers will be structured around the topics of
forward learning, collaborative planning, mental health and well-being, and remote learning
strategies.

Staff Health and Safety


 Staff are required to follow social distancing procedures and proper hand hygiene.
 Staff will not attend work sick and should they become sick during the school day, they will inform
school administration and go home to self-isolate.
 Staff will be required to practice physical distancing and safety guidelines with one another during
non- instructional time, including staff room, prep room and hallways.
 Staff who are requesting to work from home, based on underlying health concerns that make
them more vulnerable to exposure to COVID-19, should notify administration and provide a
medical note.
 PPE including face shields and gloves, will be provided for staff working with students who require
supports/interventions that cannot be done from a distance.

4. Students and Attending School


Families  Students will attend 5 days a week of in class instruction. A medical note will be required for
remote learning.
 Families who choose to educate their children at home can find more information about
homeschooling by contacting the Homeschooling Office at Manitoba Education and Training

 Classroom teachers will support the development and provision of at-home learning packages for
students who are isolating or quarantined.

Home/School Communication
 Parents will be notified by email of any direction or guidance from Manitoba Health and Manitoba
Education. Families will receive updates to this information as they are received. Updated
information will be located on the school website.

Self-Screening
 Students and staff must self-screen for symptoms at home every morning before coming to school.

 Parents/guardians are responsible for monitoring their child daily for symptoms before sending them
to school. The school can also support children with self-screening upon arrival at school.
 Students and staff who have symptoms or are sick must not come to school.
 Call Health Links at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 if you notice symptoms or if you need more
information. Those with symptoms should be tested. If the test is negative for COVID-19, they can
return 24 hours after symptoms resolve. If individuals do not get tested, they should isolate for 14
days from symptom onset, and they may return if symptoms have resolved at that time.
 Self-screening signage with exclusion criteria will be posted at school entrances.

Sick at School
 If a student becomes sick at school or is demonstrating symptoms as identified through the screening
tool, parents/guardians will be contacted and the child must go home immediately. Please note that
the administrator will have the final say in determining if a student should go home. If
parents/guardians are not available, emergency contacts will be contacted.
 A student showing symptoms at school is required to leave the classroom and move to the
designated isolation area until a parent/guardian arrives for pickup.
 The sick student is required to wear a medical mask provided by the school.
 If a sick student requires the presence of an adult while isolated, the staff member is also required to
wear a medical mask provided by the school.
 Parents/guardians may contact Health Links – Info Santé (204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257) or their
health care provider for direction.
 Additional environmental cleaning will be focused on high-touch areas and areas where the sick
individual spent time.
 A sick individual can return to the school once it has been determined that it is safe to do so by their
health care provider or public health.

Positive COVID-19
 Public Health will advise staff and students if they have been in close contact with a positive case of
COVID-19, if they need to self-isolate or self-monitor, and when they can return to school.
 Decisions about school closures in the event of a positive case of COVID-19 will be made on a case by
case basis with Public Health leading the response and providing guidance.
 If a person in the household has been diagnosed with COVID-19, is in close contact with anyone
diagnosed with COVID-19, or if anyone in the household has travelled out of the province, they are
required to consult with Health Links prior to attending the school.
 In the event of a student and/or staff member (or member of the same household) receiving a
probable or positive test for COVID-19:
o The parent/guardian or staff member will immediately advise the school principal who will
inform the superintendent.
o The superintendent will contact public health officials and collaborate with divisional staff to
implement the recommendations of Public Health.
o Upon request by public health officials, the school will provide the contact information of
students and/or staff who would be considered close contacts of the individual who received
a positive test result.
o Public Health is responsible for communicating with close contacts and for advising the school
community as appropriate. Schools will not communicate such information without specific
direction from the superintendent and public health officials.

New Student Registrations


 Families new to LSSD are asked to contact the school by phone or email to arrange a registration
appointment. Planning for new students may require additional time.
 The school will arrange for an appropriate meeting time (either in-person or online). If the family is
relocating from a region that warrants a mandatory quarantine or isolation period, they will be asked
to verify their travel dates, quarantine dates and plans. New registrations will only occur after any
mandatory quarantine or isolation period has been completed.
