KNM 6172 : Occupational Safety and Health

1 Synopsis
This course covers essential topics on occupational safety and health
applicable to address occupational safety and health issues in the
workplace. This course also enables students to analyze the effects of
workplace exposures, injuries and illnesses, fatalities and the meth-
ods to prevent incidents using the hierarchy of controls, effective
safety and health management systems. Numerous case studies are
presented which refer to current successful safety management tech-
niques, practical guidelines and followed by site visit to one of work-
place for discovery and reflection session. Data management and
prediction related to safety and health at workplace is also included.

I have studied and taken Safety and health officer course with Niosh

and a registered Safety Officer with 7years of experience in this
field. Therefore, hazard identification is part of the process used to
evaluate if any particular situation, item, thing, etc. may have the
potential to cause harm. There are 6 hazards classification which is
biological, chemical, ergonomic, physical, psychosocial and safety.
In order to identify the hazards, HIRARC is developed which is
known as hazards identification from the work job and we will
assess the risk and finally control the risk found in the job step or
process or work.
Based on OSHA ACT 1994, under Regulation 18 sub-clause a
CLO2
defines the duty of SHO to advise the employer of a place of work
on the measures to be taken, (b) defined SHO responsible to inspect
the workplace free from hazards, (c) to investigate any near miss,
accidents (d) to assist the employer or the safety and health committee, if
any, pursuant to regulation 11 of the Occupational Safety and Health (Safety
and Health Committee) Regulations 1996 [P.U.(A) 616/96] in organizing
and implementing occupational safety and health programmed at the place of
work(e) appoint as a secretary in the committee meeting. While under
FMA1967, the welfare of workers and staffs are discussed and discussed on
the machinery registration and certificate of health of the particular
machinery.
Safety can be promoted in various ways in a workplace. One of is
CLO3
during the man-hours calculation, where by the company achieves
more than 1Million working man days without Lost time
injury(LTI). A workplace injury is only considered an LTI if the
worker is unable to perform their regular duties takes time off to
recover or is assigned to modified tasks while they heal. By
celebrating the man days without injuries is one way to appreciate
the workforce that follows the rules and regulations set by the safety
department. Besides, launching campaigns on risk related to create
awareness is one also best practice in managing safety. Giving out
handbooks, heart to heart sessions and others programs that created
at the beginning of the year shall be implemented through the year
to sustain the safety and man days of workers.
