Smart Library Management System

The document proposes a smart library management system using RFID technology, E-cards, and a library app. This allows students to borrow and return books on their own without librarian assistance. When a new book enters the library, an RFID tag is attached with its information stored in a database. Students each receive an E-card linked to their account on the library app. The app notifies students of due dates and available books. To borrow a book, a student scans their E-card at the kiosk and places the book on the RFID scanner. To return books, students drop them at the RFID return station, which updates their account and issues a receipt. This system automates library processes and makes

INTRODUCTION

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is in use since the 1970's. RFID is a form of
automatic contact-less data capturing technique using radio frequency electromagnetic waves.

Library staff handle a tedious task involve sorting, lending, returning, tagging, eyeing
of books. In addition, library users encounter problems for finding, borrowing, localising,
renewing the borrowing, queuing, and so forth. To overcome these obstacles, this paper proposes
a smart library management system based on an E-card and RFID technology. This technology
allows the students to self borrow and self return the book without the help of an librarian. As such,
integrating RFID into library management system makes both the library users and staff’s task easy,
smart, convenient, and practical.

THE PROCESS

 When a new book is acquired by the library an RFID tag is attached into the book with the
relevant information and a detailed information is also captured in a computer database.
 Each student is supplied with an E-card. The E-card carries identification data for each
student. This E-card is connected to the library app which sends the students a reminder
message to return their books. The E-card allows the students to borrow the books only when
the previous borrowed books are returned and the queue of their Ecard is cleared.
 The library app helps the students to know which and all books are currently available in the
library.
 When a Student needs a book to be issued, she walks to the issue Kiosk, flashes her E-card
then the system opens her login account page, places the selected books on the RFID scanner
and computer records all data against her name.
 RFID Self Service book return allows the student to drop their book in the return section
which automatically sucks the book inside and checks them in instantly. The Returned items
are been displayed on the screen and the student needs to press okay which will clear their
account allowing the students to borrow other set of books.
 While returning the book if the date is exceeded then the student needs to pay the fine. This
will be done by flashing their Ecard to the RFID reader where the mode of payment will be
displayed on the monitor then the student need to choose the mode and then the transaction
will be completed.

HOW DIFFERENT IS OUR PRODUCT IN THE MARKET?

 Our product is different from the current solutions used in the market, as we imply on using a
E-CARD and an library supporting app in addition to the RFID technology used.
 Our E-card is connected to the library supporting app which in turn has each and every
students database stored.
 The students can use this app to keep track of their due dates and also get the information on
availability of the text books required in their respective branches.
 They can also read the introduction of the books they intend to borrow prior to the issuing.
 After the issuing is done the app records the due date and the is also handed a receipt at RFID
issue Kiosk. The student can track the due date as mentioned above.
 The next part is the return which includes the RFID self service book return. The students
need to walk up to the machine attached to one side of the wall with a sorter, put down their
book one at a time and it sucks them in. The same gets updated to app and they can also
receive a receipt for the same.
 Behind the wall the sorter belt has a basket’s attached to it belonging to their respective
branches.
 After the book is pushed in it gets scanned and the sorter sorts it to its respective branches
basket.
 This makes it easier and less manual work is required to set the books into their respective
racks.

CONCLUSION

This paper proposed integration of App, E-card and the RFID technology into a library management
system.
The proposed system enables the library staff to handle sorting, lending, returning, tagging, eyeing of
books in such an easy and convenient manner. In addition, library users can find, borrow, renew the
borrowing period of books easily and remotely using the proposed system.
