ACTIVITY 1
Read the paragraphs 7 and 8 of the story ‘The Light on the Hills’ ans answer the questions that follow.
[This strong feeling was ....................... It was the sorrow that gave me power.']
1. What was the desire of the boy?
Ans: The boy desired to put into the world something which should make the meanest, humblest citizen a little
happier.
2. When did the boy go back to the fields?
Ans: When he knew that his eye was true and his touch was sure, he went back to the fileds.
3. “This is better than all he has done before.” Who commented this?
Ans: One of the audience commented this.
4. What is better than all he has done?
Ans: The picture he has painted for his sister.
5. “Yet my heart ached as I did it”. Why did the boy say so?
Ans: Because he was thinking of his sister all the while he was painting.
The little girl asked the boy to do his work with great dedication. She asked him to
see the glimmer of the sunlight. In nature we could listen to the rustling of the leaves. In
nature we could also hear the rippling of streams. It is a great honour for artists to capture
the beauty of nature. It is definitely a sin to represent nature imperfectly. The little boy was
in great grief when he learned about the death of his sister. The boy felt that happiness
is something difficult to seize.
So to conclude:- In a Noun Phrase in the subject position, the Head Noun may be preceded by an ‘Adjective’
and a ‘Determiner’ . And sometimes the Noun Phrase may contain a Relative Clause
e.g. Her brother who became a painter got inspiration from her.
In the Verb Phrase above the Main Verb is ‘talks’ and the words that come after the Main Verb is the Prepositional
Phrase ‘to her brother’. Here ‘to’ is a Preposition and it is the key word of the phrase. Hence it is called a
‘Prepositional Phrase’ .
So to conclude:- A Verb Phrase contains Main Verb, and a Prepositional Phrase or an Adverb Phrase etc.
