ACTIVITY 3 (Refer Activity 1 on Page No. 89)

Complete the following by choosing appropriate words from the box given below.

The little girl asked the boy to do his work with great dedication. She asked him to
see the glimmer of the sunlight. In nature we could listen to the rustling of the leaves. In
nature we could also hear the rippling of streams. It is a great honour for artists to capture
the beauty of nature. It is definitely a sin to represent nature imperfectly. The little boy was
in great grief when he learned about the death of his sister. The boy felt that happiness
is something difficult to seize.

[seize, honour, glimmer, grief, rippling, rustling, dedication, sin]

ACTIVITY 4 (Refer Activity 2 on Page No. 96)

In the first two units, you have learned about noun phrases. Noun phrases usually appear right at the
beginning of sentences. They can also come towards the end of sentences.
Look at the sentence below.
The little sister talks to her brother.
We can divide the sentence into to as follows
The little sister talks to her brother
Here the first part [The little sister] of the sentence is called the Subjective Part or the Noun Phrase(in the subject
place) and the second part [talks to her brother] is the ‘Predicative Part or the Verb Phrase.
In the Noun Phrase above the Head Noun is ‘sister’ and the words that come before the Head Noun are ‘the
Adjective ‘little’ and the Article ‘the’. The article here is a ‘determiner’

So to conclude:- In a Noun Phrase in the subject position, the Head Noun may be preceded by an ‘Adjective’
and a ‘Determiner’ . And sometimes the Noun Phrase may contain a Relative Clause
e.g. Her brother who became a painter got inspiration from her.

In the Verb Phrase above the Main Verb is ‘talks’ and the words that come after the Main Verb is the Prepositional
Phrase ‘to her brother’. Here ‘to’ is a Preposition and it is the key word of the phrase. Hence it is called a
‘Prepositional Phrase’ .
So to conclude:- A Verb Phrase contains Main Verb, and a Prepositional Phrase or an Adverb Phrase etc.

Underline the noun phrases in the subject position in the following sentences. You may also identify the head
nouns in each. (One has been done for you.)
a. The little girl in the story supports him.
Ans: The little girl.
b. Her brother who became a painter got inspiration from her.
Ans: Her brother.
c. The girl advised her brother to paint pictures.
Ans: The girl
d. The hills which they visited together appeared misty.
Ans: The hills
e. The boy became a professional artist in the end.
Ans: The boy
