1. Summary
Rizal, as always been regarded as national hero, whose works – Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo awakened the Filipino nationalism and patriotism. Having an original version in
Spanish language, English translation was necessary when the American occupation took place.
Well-known translators only worked with what remains accessible to them. Leon Ma. Guerrero,
then ambassador to the court of St. James, gave his translation to Manila Times for publication,
which is so prized that it became the only translation people read now. In analysis of Guerrero’s
translation, it appears that there were distortions from the original manuscripts. This is because
Guerrero intended to make Rizal’s book more pleasing to the new generation of English-
speaking Filipinos as well as the wider audience if English-speaking people. He wrote the
translation as though Rizal is writing it himself, he made it more appealing for the present
generation or for the modern ear.
2. How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?
The article develop and promote nationalism to me by taking pride of my fellow Filipino’s
achievement. Rizal’s works, should be studied even when there’s a transition in the government
or even a language barrier. In this case, Rizal used Spanish language to expose the wrongdoings
in the Spanish era. Although it is long over, his efforts should not be forgotten, the learnings
from his life and writings must be taken and studied for the future generations. Preserving what
the Filipinos have been through, the culture, tradition, and history, that is an expression of
nationalism.
3. How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
In reading this article, I can’t help but be reminded for Rizal’s patriotism. His devotion for the
Philippines and its citizens, his love, his integrated values and beliefs, and his sacrifices for the
land, commemorating those helped in developing and/or promoting patriotism to me.
4. How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?
Keeping alive the memory of Rizal and his life and works, makes me realize how honorable his
efforts were. Not just him but also the other heroes. They have the heart to serve our country.
And knowing this has develop and/or promote volunteerism to me. Volunteerism appeals to me
in a more different way. As a child, I’m a boy scout which develop values and acquire
competencies to become responsible citizen, I also did volunteer works such as clean up drives,
feeding programs, and sports clinic. Compared to what our heroes did, those are just my simple
ways in giving service to my community as I was inspired by our heroes.

1. Summary
In 1950’s, the inclusion of Rizal’s life and works to all public and private schools, colleges, and
universities became a controversy. This is because the life of Rizal, despite his popularity, was
largely unread. Thus, Rizal’s Bill aims to give more acknowledgment and appreciation to the
national hero’s life and works – particular to his most famous novels. Yet, the lawmakers had to
address the dangers of studying these, specifically, it could be read differently, reading
differently could be ideological and political, and the interpretation to his writings may vary. The
arguments comes from the Catholic Church insisting of Rizal’s harsh criticism to the friars and a
lot more, which Teodoro Locsin Sr. defended that Rizal’s writings talks about the past and
therefore must stay there.
2. How does it develop and/or promote nationalism to you?
Rizal’s Bill, an act that aims to give appreciation to Dr. Jose Rizal’s life and works is a way to
develop nationalism not just to me but to other students as well. Studying the history,
commemorating our heroes’ sacrifices and helping preserving it is a way of nationalism.
3. How does it develop and/or promote patriotism to you?
Patriotism develops to me by supporting the continuance of studying Rizal’s life and works. I
believe that by learning about Rizal’s life and works, a person would realize what a true
patriotism is. Having a sacrifice for the love of the country involving life when the need arises,
serving the country, etc. Through the life of Rizal, the younger generation would be able to take
this to their heart and mind.
4. How does it develop and/or promote volunteerism to you?
Dr. Jose Rizal voluntarily sacrificed his life for the sake of his country. He willingly exposed the
abuses in the Spanish regime, he awakened the patriotism and nationalism among the Filipinos.
That being said, volunteerism develops/promote to me in a way that I wanted to do something
small or big, as a tribute to what Dr. Rizal did. I look forward doing volunteer works for my
community.
