INTRODUCTION
Motorcycle chain endures heavy abuse and undergoes a lot of wear and tear. It is
recommended that the chain is regularly cleaned and oiled for safe and sound running
of the motorcycle

The final drive chain is one of the most critical parts on a motorcycle and it
endures a lot of stress and to make it worse, it is left out in the open to face dust, grime,
muck and whatever the road throws at it. So even though it is one tough nut to crack,
the chain has a certain life span and it needs tender love and care at regular intervals to
keep it healthy and to improve its life span. A well-maintained chain also guarantees a
healthy set of sprockets which again require regular replacement depending upon the
kind of use they undergo.

A badly maintained chain will rapidly eat through a set of sprockets requiring
you to change the entire chain sprocket set frequently. There are some simple and
efficient methods to keep the chain working fine as well as to make sure that it lasts
longer and that it does not wear out the sprockets in lesser period of time than usual.
Just stick to the following steps and try to squeeze a few minutes once every week to
attend to the chain and it will go a long way in keeping your lovely ride working fine.

EXPERIMENT

AIM
To conduct a test on power transmission using two wheeler chains set up.

APPARATUS REQUIRED
 Two wheeler Chain Set up
 Testing Panel

MAXIMUM LOAD CALCULATION (EDDY CURRENT DYNAMOMETER)

Power = 2𝜋NT/60,000 KW

2.2 = (2 × 3.14 × 650 × T) / 60,000

T = 54.38 Nm

T = W × 9.81 × Arm length Arm length = - - - - M

32.32 = W × 9.81 × 0.131 Ex arm length = 0.131

W = 25.15 kg

FORMULA USED
1. Motor Power

Motor power = (n/t)× (3600/1000) kW

Where,
n – No. of revolutions of energy meter
t – time taken for ‘n’ revolutions of energy meter in seconds
1000 – energy meter constant

2. Eddy Current Dynamometer Power

Power = 2𝜋NT/60,000 KW
Where,
N - Speed of the Dynamometer side in rpm
T – Torque

3. Error

Error = Difference between the Motor power and eddy current

dynamometer power.

EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE
1. Switch ON the Testing panel and set the zero in load indicator.
2. Switch ON the motor using 3 phase power. Switch to tension in load indicator.
3. Now apply the load for example 5 kg at the time note down the energy meter
reading for 5 revolutions and speed indicator reading.
4. Next apply a different set of load repeat the previous step maximum up to 35 kg
load can be applied.
5. After completing the experiment reduce the load to zero using load controller.
6. Switch off the motor and testing panel.

TABULATION (sample reading)

Time taken
Sl.N Speed Motor Power Dynamometer
Load (kg) for ‘5’ revs of Error
O (rpm) (kW) Power (kW)
energy meter
1 0 487 60.9 0.295 0.065 0.23
2 4 484 56.47 0.318 0.260 0.058
3 10 482 50.41 0.357 0.648 0.291
4 15 480 45.50 0.395 0.968 0.573
5 20 477 41.96 0.428 1.283 0.855

Model calculation

For reading No. 5

1. Motor Power
Motor power = (n/t)× (3600/1000) kW
= (5/41.96) × (3600/1000)
= 0.428kW

2. Eddy Current Dynamometer Power

Power = 2𝜋NT / 60,000 KW
= (2π ×477 ×20 ×9.81 ×0.131 )/60000
= 1.283 kW
3. Error

MICRO MECH INSTRUMENTS Page 5

AU – DCTR 01 AUTOMOBILE LAB

Error = Difference between the Motor power and eddy current power.

=0.428 1.283

=0.855

RESULT
Thus the two wheeler chain is tested successfully.
