MATH 1041 Assignment - 3 - v2

The document contains 5 physics assignment questions about various mechanics concepts like friction, pulleys, springs, and inclined planes, requiring the calculation of things like work, acceleration, speed, and static friction coefficients using diagrams, equations, and given values for mass, spring constant, angle of incline, and coefficients of friction. Students are to submit their detailed work and answers in Blackboard by the due date and time listed.

It is educational to write down the steps in your calculation in detail.

Q3.1 (20 points)

A block is placed on a flat plate with a rough surface. The plate is initially in a horizontal
position, but you then lift it from one side so that its angle 𝜃 with respect to the horizontal
grows slowly. Initially (with 𝜃 = 0), the block is at rest with respect to the plate, but when 𝜃
is large enough (at value 𝜃 = 𝜃𝑠 ), the block starts to slide. The coefficient of static friction
between the block and the plate is 𝜇.
(a) Show that 𝜇 = tan 𝜃𝑠 (i.e., the coefficient of static friction can be obtained from the
angle at the time when motion starts) (10 points)
(b) Just before the block slides, the frictional force between the surface and the block is
𝜇𝐹𝑁 (where 𝐹𝑁 is the normal force); this formula seems to say that the frictional force
“comes from” the normal force. Does that mean that friction cannot be larger than the
normal force? (5 points)
(c) For what values of 𝜃𝑠 is friction larger than 𝐹𝑁 ? (5 points)

Q3.2 (20 points)

A 20 kg block (block 2) on top of a table is attached to a pulley (short thick red rope in the
figure). A long black rope is attached to the table, goes through this pulley, then through a
second pulley and its other end is attached to a 5 kg block (block 1) that hangs vertically, as
shown below. No friction is involved, and the pulleys have negligible masses.
(a) Draw a free-body diagram for the pulley on the left (5 points)
(b) If block 1 descends a distance Δ𝑦, what is the displacement, Δ𝑥, of block 2? (5 points)
(c) Find the acceleration of block 1. (10 points)
Q3.3 (20 points)
8 kg
Consider the system shown in the figure. Assume that the rope and
pulley have negligible mass, and that the pulley is frictionless. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between 𝑚2 (8 kg) and the tabletop is m2
𝜇𝑘 = 0.25. The blocks are released from rest.
When 𝑚1 (6 kg) has descended 1.5m, m1
(a) What has been the work done by gravity? (5 points) 6 kg
(b) What has been the work done by friction? (5 points)
(c) What is the speed of 𝑚1 ? (10 points)

Q3.4 (20 points)

On a winter day, a warehouse worker is shoving boxes up a rough plank inclined at an angle 𝛼
above the horizontal. The plank is partially covered with ice, with more ice near the bottom of
the plank than near the top, so that the coefficient of friction increases with the distance 𝑥 along
the plank: 𝜇 = 𝐴𝑥, where 𝐴 is a positive constant and the bottom of the plank is at 𝑥 = 0.
Assume the coefficients of kinetic and static friction are equal, i.e., 𝜇𝑘 = 𝜇𝑠 = 𝜇. The worker
shoves a box up the plank so that it leaves the bottom of the plank moving at speed 𝑣0 . The
box stops after moving a distance 𝑑 along the plank.
(a) What is the work done by gravity (as a function of 𝑚, 𝑔, 𝛼, and 𝑑)? (5 points)
(b) What is the work done by kinetic friction (as a function of the variables above, and the
constant 𝐴)? (5 points)
(c) Show that when the box first comes to rest, it will remain at rest if
2
3𝑔 sin2 𝛼
𝑣0 ≥ .
𝐴 cos 𝛼
(10 points)

Q3.5 (20 points)

A block with a mass of 500 g is dropped onto a relaxed vertical

spring with spring constant 𝑘 = 2.5 N/cm. The block becomes m
attached to the spring and compresses the spring 10cm before
momentarily stopping. While the spring is being compressed, what
work is done on the block
(a) by the gravitational force? (4 points)
(b) by the spring force? (4 points)
(c) What is the speed of the block just before it hits the
spring? (Assume that friction is negligible.) (6 points)
(d) If the speed at impact is doubled, what is the maximum
compression of the spring? (6 points)
