Write a short personal paragraph (10 to 15 sentences) which describes a

personal experience you have had that taught you there are consequences for
the choices/decisions you make.

1. TOPIC SENTENCE – Be sure to start your paragraph with a topic sentence which states
your theme, the life lesson you learned from your experience.

Ex. My experience with my friends last summer taught me that I need to think through the
consequences of the decisions I make.
Ex. Getting arrested two years ago was an experience I’ll never forget, and it made me realize
that every choice I make has consequences.

2. DETAILS – Be sure to include:

>Give the WHO/WHAT/WHERE/WHEN of your experience in a clear order from beginning


to middle to end.
>Explain what you THOUGHT and how you FELT before, during, and after the experience.
>Explain what you LEARNED from the experience and how you CHANGED

3. CONCLUDING SENTENCE – Be sure to end your paragraph with a strong concluding


sentence restating your theme.

Ex. This personal experience taught me that…


It is important for people to think about…
Having been through…has made me realize…
Ultimately, it is up to people to…
I’ll never forget that…

4. TRANSITIONS – Be sure to use transitions between your details to make your


paragraph fluent and easy to follow. (see transitions handout)

5. WORD CHOICE – Be sure to use precise and specific word choices.
