With all of the security threats in the world today on the internet, e-commerce websites are just
another avenue that is fertile with sensitive customer information. It is imperative that e-commerce
websites be secure and here is how I would ensure my customers privacy if I ran an e-commerce
company. First, I would use a secure e-commerce platform, not something that was easily penetrable. I
would definitely use Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS), to ensure that data between my
website and people’s browsers is encrypted. I would also use SSL certificates to authenticate the identity
of my business and encrypt the data in transit. This protects both the company and the customer from
having important information stolen. I would also require strong passwords from my customers. Their
password would need to be at least 10 characters long with a good combination of capital letters, lower
case letters, and numbers and symbols, the more complex the better.
I would also set up system alerts so that if suspicious activity were happening from a particular
credit card or IP address, such as multiple orders with different credit cards or the names or addresses are
different from the names on cards, it would set off an alert for the company to look into what is going on.
I would layer the security with firewalls and login boxes and search queries as well. And lastly, I would
provide my employees with security training. You can have some of the most elaborate security measures
in place for a business, but if the employees do not know how to use the system, or recognize any
problems then having all that security in place would be almost useless.
