Answer all five (5) questions.

Question 1
Determine whether each statement is True or False. If a statement is False, give your reason.

(a) A 6 x 3 matrix has six rows.

(b) For the product of two matrices to be defined, the number of columns of the first matrix
must equal the number of rows of the second matrix.

(c) Every matrix is row-equivalent to a matrix in row-echelon form.

(d) If the row-echelon form of the augmented matrix of a system of linear equations is given
as below
1 0 0 0 0
(0 1 0 0 | 1)
0 0 1 0 2

then the original system is inconsistent.

(e) A homogeneous system of four linear equations in six variables has an infinite number of
solutions.

(f) The identity matrix is an elementary matrix.

(g) If E is an elementary matrix, then 2E is an elementary matrix.

(h) The matrix A is row-equivalent to the matrix B if there exists a finite number of elementary
matrices E1 , E2. . . , Ek such that A = Ek Ek-1………. E2 E1 B.
