Slim laptops may not have an Ethernet port, in which case you'll need to either use a USB
Ethernet adapter or connect wirelessly if your router allows it.
1. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into your computer. Make sure you're using an
Ethernet cable (RJ45), not a telephone cable (RJ11).
2. Plug the other end of the cable into an open LAN port. This can be any open LAN port
on either the router or the switch, depending on your LAN setup.
3. On the PC, click Start, then Control Panel, then Network Connections or Right-click on
your network connection. You'll see this in your System Tray. f you are connecting your
computers through a switch with no router, you'll need to assign each computer on the
network its own individual IP address. This process is handled automatically if you're
using a router.
4. Click Open Network and Sharing Center.
5. Click the Ethernet link at the top of the window. You'll see this next to "Connections."
Or Click Local Area Connection. It will open a dialog box.
6. In the dialog box,, click on Properties
7. Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) then click Properties
8. Select Use the following IP address
9. Enter an IP address and Subnet mask. For example:
IP address: 141.121.74.0
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

Note: Please do not use more than one network connection at one time.
To disconnect your wired Ethernet connection, unplug your Ethernet cable from its jack.
To disconnect your wireless connection:
On the Windows taskbar (bottom, right), right-click the connection icon and select Disconnect
from [connection name]
Or
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
A new screen will open with a list of network connections. Right-click Local Area
Connection or Wireless Connection and select Disable for disabling the network.
Note
2. Connect the USB cable to the hard drive if not already connected and the other end to a USB
port on the computer.
3. Plug the other end of the USB cable into a USB port on the computer.
4. After connecting the external hard drive to the computer, it should be recognized
automatically by your computer's operating system. Your computer should find and install
any necessary drivers.
5. In Windows, File Explorer may automatically open, displaying the contents of the external
hard drive. If File Explorer does not automatically open, manually open File Explorer and
locate the drive.
6. In the Notification Area of the taskbar, click the up arrow to view the items in the systray.
7. A menu lists the removable media you can eject. Click the name of the external hard drive. In
this example, the option to eject the external hard drive is named "Eject My Passport Ultra."
After clicking the eject option, wait for a message stating it is safe to remove the hardware before
pulling the external hard drive out of the computer. If no message is displayed after five seconds,
it is likely safe to disconnect the external hard drive.
